Smiths in Eastenders, Coronation St. jukeboxes

Russholme Ruffian writes: Watched Eastenders on BBC1 last night (Dec. 11), The Jukebox in the Queen Vic was playing "This Charming Man" in the background. Obviously this is a seminal moment in telivision history... If you are desperate to see this again (and believe me, to do this you will have to be desperate), then the omnibus edition of 'enders will be screened on Sunday.

Tigger3 writes: I was watching Granada plus tv channel, an old episode of Coronation Street & the exciting action was taking place in the cafe run by Gail Tilsley, her young assistant Martin Platt was chatting to one of the customers Jenny Bradley & the juke box was playing in the background & what was it playing... "ASK" by our beloved Smiths. Ok it's not much but it made the episode a treat for me.

Whatever happened to those characters, well I'll tell ya shall I (admits to being a sad Corrie fan) Martin Platt grew up to marry Gail Tilsley (at present they are going through a divorce) Jenny Bradley left the series after her dad got killed by a tram in Blackpool chasing Rita Fairclough. Eeee it all 'appens up north!

Wow - a Moz song in the Queen Vic (Score:1)
I remember quite a few years back there were Moz and Smiths posters in Albert Square - but here in the U.S. we are 2 years behind in EastEnders episodes that are shown on PBS - I guess it will be another 2 years before we get to see the "seminal moment" on television. :)
Those of us in the U.S. who have BBC America are only 2 weeks behind in episodes tho - I wish my cable company would get the network. Oh well.

      Eastenders.... (Score:1)
I confess to watching old episodes of 'enders on UK gold and can confirm that there is a Paul Weller and Smiths/Moz fan in the crew.
Both artists have been played in the background and not just singles that were released.
Now My Heart is full was on in the background recently (honest!).
Don't know if to laugh or cry!

I remember the very first Smiths song played in the Eastenders Queen Vic way back in 1985 when it first began. The song? Believe it or not it was "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" from Hatful Of HOllow! How they got it onto the jukebox in 1985 I don't know (no CD jukeboxes in them days). The Albert Square photo session was taken for the 1991 Kill Uncle tour programme by the way.

Incidentally Jo O Keefe featured on The South Bank Show in 1987 (friend of Shaun Duggan, the Smiths fan-cum-playwright who now writes for Brookside) has written for Eastenders and now writes for Coronation St which may explain a thing or two.
