Robbie Williams was on the UK's chart show 'Top of the Pops' this evening (Friday 19.30 8/12/00) performing his single 'Supreme'. The take on Morrissey was so obvious that even my wife noticed (not a big Moz fan). The peformance featured a fake disability (tho' crutches were later abandoned), and a quiffed hairstyle. He also encouraged stage invaders and then kneeled as people approached... just as our Mozzer does. Finally he was mobbed - it could have been "Everyday is Like Sunday". Coincidence, or does Robbie have the "Live in Dallas" DVD??

  • Although I didn't happen to catch this show, I find it hard to believe that someone so seemingly full of himself (Robbie) would actually impersonate someone like Morrissey, if not only to poke fun at him. Should Morrissey take it as offensive? No not at all, so neither should any of us...after all, it WAS Robbie Williams doing this, and who cares about him!

  • In the recent weeks, Robbie Williams has been performing piss-takes of several other singers, most famously, Liam Gallagher. When someone without talent has run his course, his looks are fading, his 'cheekiness' is beginning to grate ...

  • I caught an appearance of his on some European Awards show (don't recall which one - seems like every other day, I'm catching some awards show or another on TV) and noticed that he looked/acted conspicuously like Morrissey.

I wasn't sure if it was parody or an actual image-change (if it WAS parody, well, he should've stuck w/ Liam Gallagher, as I doubt most of that teeny-bopper audience would've gotten his Moz impression).

  • For all the USA contingent of Morrissey fans.

The original poster of this message is obviously a very avid watcher of UK pop music shows - of which many are aimed at the younger market - sub 15 years old.

Anyhow, there background to this is that there
have been a couple of TV shows recently in which Robbie Williams has attempted to waltz around stage, singing his new song (and Rock DJ) and throwing the microphone wires in a
    morrissey 'manner' - whipping action.

This is a new era for Robbie Williams - blessed with one decent song now - his new single -
he has presented himself on the UK national lottery show, CDTV, and Top of The Pops where - singing live (which is a miracle these days)
as reported - he invited some very
well dressed (and well made up) teenage girls onto
the tops of the pops stage. This was all
in the manner which seemed very like Morrissey concerts.

Fortunately, I have to say that Morrissey obviously has more class (and practise !)
at this. Robbie was ingulfed as
30 girls were covering and shielding him on the stage. At the end of the song, robbie shouted "I'm being raped" in a comic sort of way - as the prearranged girls all stood around smiling rather nicely.

This is the 3rd time that I have the
fortune of listening and watching the performance of this song. I have to admit that from Robbie's Rock DJ onwards - it seems that Robbbie has a couple of Morrissey live video concerts in his video player this week.

Perhaps he lives to regret the rather odd comments he made about Morrissey - earlier in the year.

this might be interesting for you fans:
when I did an interview with morrissey last october at the tour, I asked him what he was
thinking about robbie williams. he simply replied: "Jolly, yes jolly". That was all he said. I leave the interpretation up to you ...

  • My husband and I were in London last week, and just happened to see TOTP while hanging out in our hotel room. What a riot to see this Robbie guy up there with crutches. I told the hubby, "looks like a Morrissey prop". Then sure enough he starts dancing, and whipping the mic cord around just like our man!! What a riot! The stage rushing took the cake, though.

  • I don't know if anyone noticed, but when Robbie Williams sang "Kids" with Kylie Minogue at the European Music Awards, he was dressed suspiciously like Moz. I said this to my boyfriend, but he thought I was being silly. But really: Black shoes, jeans, white button up shirt, blazer, and his hair was in a semi-pompadour.... Given the recent "Rock DJ" video, that seems to be very un-Robbie-like attire.... Anyway, I think any imitation is flattery as long as it isn't insulting and I, for one, would mimic Morrissey in front of millions of people just to let the ones who "knew" know what I was doing... Sort of a secret salute...

  • Robbie williams hasn't taken off morrissey at all, he wouldn't want too. Look around u, the quif is the fashion at the moment, and where do u think morrissey got it from- Elvis!!! Robbie is a huge fan of elvis and Elvis would be Robs only influence of the hair. As for swinging his mike, robs done that forever and look how many other artists do that and who started it- elvis! I think morrissey is the real copy cat don't u?- elvis's hair and mike thing what ever next. The crutches were just a joke cos one of robs mates broke his leg so rob knicked them 4 a laugh, it wasn't planned like morrisey to try and get as much attention as if can, he doesn't need to do that does rob, he's already got enough. And those girls did u see the look on the first lasses face, if that was planned, shes an f*****g good actor, robbie is not sad as does not need to plan stunts to publisize him like morrissey did. Morrisey is past it, rob will never be past it. He has more talent in his little toe than morrissey has in his whole body, and u lot should give him sum respect.
