Last night, (7 December) the Texan band At The Drive-In performed part of "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" during their penultimate song at their gig at London's Camden Electric Ballroom.

I'm not sure what the song was called, (does anyone know, were they there?) but at the end of one of their verses, the singer shouted "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" and after a guitar solo, started to sing/shout "I've seen this happen in other peoples's lives/and now it's happening in mine", until the end of the song, in his own inimitable style. This took me completely by surprise and left me quite shocked!

UPDATE (Dec. 10): shoplifterromo writes:

It's no surprise that "At the Drive In" recently covered the Smiths on stage. While interviewing the band in their hometown of El Paso a few years back, the guys told me they had just recorded a Smiths track for an upcoming tribute album. They also said better-known bands like "Radiohead" were also contributing. But two years later, I guess the project was never completed.

Why does the British media give this shit band so much praise, and pass off a brilliant artist like Morrissey as a "has been"?

they've put out the best album this year so far. cedric is a smiths fan. if he wants to cover their songs, that should be a compliment, not a reason for smiths fans to be arrogant & say ATDI shouldnt be covering something as good as Moz. they admire him, & if thats how they wanna pay tribute, great. they used to do a really good cover of This Night Has Opened My Eyes at local shows in el paso. i normally stick to music like morrissey, gene, james, etc..., but ATDI are really impressive live, and when i heard the record it was just as good. the lyrics are good, the singer is passionate, they're all well-spoken and intelligent, they draw from good influences, the musicians can play well, they have things to say, they're nice people, and the songs are catchy. what more do you want? for them to sound more like the smiths? if you dont like their style or you prefer other types of music, that's one thing, but you can't say theyre a shite band, because they simply aren't.
