Movie recommendations? "Billy Elliot" (no direct Morrissey reference)

giant writes:

This is, to say the least, a remote "Morrissey reference" however, I found the movie set in the North of England and its lead character, Billy Elliot, "a small shy boy" who is breaking all the traditions of his coal mining town, because he desperately wants to learn Ballet, to be so similar at least in a romantic sense, to Morrissey's story, that I was compelled to write. Also, as the movie opens, Cosmic Dancer is played as the jubliant boy is leaping on a trampoline. The whole story is very Poetic and liberating, I found it extremely pleasing to look at and would bet Moz himself might also find the movie to be very good.

Since things are kind of slow around here, does anyone else have any other movie recommendations?

Romper Stomper was just released on DVD, and I'd highly recomend any of the following:

    This Boy's Life
    A Clockwork Orange
    Trainspotting
The Snapper (a small indie film)
    She's the One/Brothers McMullan
    The Quiet Man
    Wilde
    Dangerous Liasons (the original one)

There are lots more but these are just a few of my favorites...

stupid title, great film. Loved the characters and dialogue.

                      "Croupier"
A slick gambling/drama/crime film that deserved to have a larger audience.

I just saw the best film. "On Borrowed Time" from 1939. Lionel Barrymore is this mean old man in a wheelchair who is trying to raise his grandson. Death comes for him and he traps him in an apple tree and no-one can die for the rest of the movie. totally amazing and the kind of film I never expected to be made in 1939. with some of the most bizarre dialogue I've ever heard. "Stay away from that tree or I'll brain you with my cane!" "I'll prove I'm not crazy. Catch a fly and give it some poison, it won't die." When Aunt Demi starts asking Miss Nellie repeatedly about her gas problem, my head started spinning. Later on the little boy (who's name for some reason is "Pud") says casually of the Aunt, "Let's kill her and bury her in the ground." I'll be thinking about this for a while.

Other films that stick in my mind:
Most anything by Lars von Trier -dancer in the Dark, the idiots, Breaking the waves, the kingdom.
