¡Oye Esteban! review in O.C. Register

In Friday's Orange County Register (California) there was a review of "Oye Esteban" by Ben Wener, the Register's music critic. Here it is:
Morrissey, "¡Oye Esteban!" (Warner Reprise, $24.98 for DVD, $19.98 for video) - Funny how the beautiful moper who used to bemoan the notion of music videos when he fronted the Smiths has made so many of them on his own - and so many featuring him mugging at the camera. How much you'll get out of this depends on how much you appreciate crooning asexual icons done up like glam James Deans. The 19 songs are excellent across the board; the videos get a bit repetitious. Swoon away, fans - it's been hard to see most of these. Some of us, though, may listen with the TV off.

You have to admit that making videos is not Morrissey's best talent. I'm not sure who comes up with some of the ideas but his videos to me are for the most part sub-par. Some are entertaining and enjoyable, others are watchable, and others are repetitive or just plain suck. (Hence as the critic says...listen but don't watch.) I dare anyone to come to the defense of Sunny as a video. The song is beautiful and the video does it no justice.

If the day came when Morrissey used a special effect, I'd get such a shock I'd probably break my neck and when I hear "My Way" its such a sad sound...

What do you all think of this DVD? I havn't a DVD player to critique Oye Esteban. :(

Personally, I bought two of the DVD's just in case I happen to misplace one. I already own most of the video's on VHS from previous collections, however, even without the new-released video's of Moz, it's still a wonderful collection. Of course, I have big-screen with excellent surround-sound which adds to the enjoyment. But the video's I"ve never seen before are particularly special to me. "Seasick, yet still docked" is a chilling look into the world of Moz. Also, "Boyracer" is excellent and I enjoy "Boxers" too. Yes, I must agree that "Sunny" is such a great song and the video isn't very good. I love that song and was hoping to catch a glimpse of Moz in it, which never occured. Overall, I would rate it his best visual collection yet (incuding the Smith video's). Concerning his performance in the video's, I have always thought his live performances were better. But, Morrissey is a singer, not an actor. I enjoy him for what he is and love the new DVD. SOME NEW SONGS WOULD BE EVEN BETTER THOUGH. I just wish he would try to get along better with record company's.-----Yours Truly, Hated for loving

First of all, there is only so much you can do with a music video without using some sort of special effects. Moz singing or walking around is basically what he does best. Most of these videos were shot in England, so don't expect American critics to give them props. I liked a few of these videos. Seasick was haunting, and the old footage of Fred Mertz (or "Bub" if you wanna call him that) added a nostalgic feel to it. This was easily the best video. The More You Ignore...was also a great example of how a video should be done. Suedehead, Dagenham Dave and Boy Racer were also good videos. The rest was pretty repetitious. Pregnant...isn't as good as people make it out to be, and Sunny just plain flat out sucked. Oujia Board is one of Moz's best videos and should have been added to this collection.
