London radio station XFM has been playing a very interesting version of 'The Is A Light That Never Goes Out' by German artist Schneider TM. His version is called 'The Light 3000'. It's on XFM's N1 list (30 second sample included) and is played a few times a day. It's very different, very electronic and futuristic sounding, but I like it. I've been searching for a copy but haven't found one yet.

When I clicked onto the song, Internet Explorer gave me the "uh...so...like, whaddaya want me to open this with?" I clicked Realplayer, with no success.

But I would suggest, while you're there, to give a listen to Elf Power's "Jane" - one of my favorite songs of the 90s (I'm quite suprised it's on this list, as it's not a new song by any means).

I think it's a very good version ... I was always afraid of some electronica band trying to cover The Smiths but this sounds OK.

Can anyone who has the song put it on Napster?

The Great Eastern Hotel, Liverpool St (Score:2, Interesting)
Saw them performing this at a free gig at the above-mentioned hotel on Sunday night [I don't know if there's a Delgados connection]. Really quite splendid: very much a considered cover version, I think.

The venue deserves some description... so very modern, all clean lines, transparent lifts & rock gardens. The concert actually took place in a cavernous atrium, with an interesting (if somewhat harsh) acoustic. There was an accompanying video that during the song you're interested in mainly consisted of a nighttime street scene; all you could really see was blurred headlights. Which I thought was quite fitting, really.

It's always nice to see a strong discrepancy between a venue and the state of the audience, I feel. The Great Eastern is a bit of a luxury joint: uniformed flunkies circle the punters, conscientiously replacing any ashtray that shows even the slightest sign of being used. Tables are furnished with small bowls of olives (gratis, naturally) & they charge £2.50 for a glass of water. All this ostentation & only a bunch of sopping wet Ditcherati in their Sunday slacks to see it.

Yep, I checked out the cover after I stumbled on by accident - it is available in record shops here in London. Its good to see a challenging cover and not a cover by a dreary guitar band with Gene-esque vocals. Another great cover version is Cinerama's version of the Smiths' London from one of their recent singles and now on a singles comp of theirs. Not familiar check out www.cinerama.co.uk (the lead singer used to be in The Wedding Present) Not looking forward to the Hootie cover though!!
