My just-arrived December issue of Select Magazine has a graphic of world-wide "arbitrary musical tastes." (pp12-13) They spotlight such local scenes as Polish Hip-Hop and Japanese Rastas, and include "Californian Brit-Pop" and "Hispanic Morrissey Devotees."

The blurb of text regarding Morrissey reads:
In Britain he be a weird old geezer with an interest in criminals and flower-arranging, but among the Hispanic community in sunny Los Angeles Moz is still God. None are more devout than The Sweet and Tender Hooligans, the tribute act fronted by Jose R Maldonado [inset]. "No one loves him as much as we do," says the Mexican Mozzer. "Most Hispanic-Americans come from working class backgrounds not unlike first-generation Irish immigrants into England – maybe we relate to Morrissey because his upbringing was so much like ours."

There is indeed a small b&w pic of Mr. Maldonado in concert accompanying the text.

    Mexican Moz? (Score:1, Insightful)
Morrisseys obsession with Jimmy Dean and Oscar Wilde. Love for Pat Pheonix, Charles Hawtrey and olde Brittania. The apparent lust for violence, boxers and Eric Cantona. The romance of London town and more recently, Latin America. Anyone see a pattern emerging? Moz has a mind of such activity that the consumption of subject matter is enormous. To those who "love him more than anybody" over there, don't take it personally.

To Jose and the rest of the Hooligans... Kudos on having your talent and devotion for Moz recognized. Isn't it wonderful to know that you are appreciated? Good job, Hooligans!

Frankly, I am so sick of hearing about Morrissey's hispanic devotees. Just because he picked L.A. to live-because of it's hispanic population?-doesn't mean that they are like the absolute most devoted fans ever.

There are many diferent countries where fans are equally devoted to Moz. This is just another "Moz phase" for everyone to get excited about.

I find it rather boring myself.

The statement reads "Nobody loves him as much as we do" Although it doesn't specify who "we" refers to, I feel it's important that I clarify it. "We" refers to Los Angeles and Southern California in general. It was NOT my intention to single anyone in L.A. out. When I was contacted by Select to do this interview, I was asked a lot of questions and it seems that they chose to print portions of my answers. I know that Southern California has many Hispanic American fans, but it was not my intention to make it seem like we're the only ones that matter. I really hope that everyone who reads this understands. Morrissey, L.A. loves you.
