"Wide to Receive" covered by Jeffrey Altergott - free download

As a Smiths/Morrissey fan since 1985 and occasional lurker on the mailing lists and newgroups, I've come to find that the one of the most popular questions among fans is "what else do you listen to?". With the soulless thud of the "98 Christina Spears Sync" era seemingly inescapable (in American pop culture, anyhow), I've increasingly turned to independent music to find my own answers to that question.

I stumbled across Jeffrey Altergott by way of recommendation, and I've found that his latest work, Icarus Grounded, is far and away my favourite album of 2000. It's a confluence of fantastically melodic pop, passionate lyrics, and, as Moz would say, "a lovely singing voice". But you don't have to take my word for it - download his cover of Morrissey's "Wide to Receive" in mp3 format here for free.

Enjoy!

this sounds like his publicist stumbled across this newsgroup and found a quick way to get a whole bunch of unsuspecting Moz fans running to listen to their new protege.

the vocals aren't great but i really like

for free, it was definitely worth the time it

as far as the person who thinks the encoding is
wrong, if you are using windows download

often times, files get transferred in ascii
instead of binary and they get copied with line
feeds. this program takes those out.

Oh god! I just listened to it and am ALMOST speachless.

I believe there are just some people (many actually) that should NOT even try to cover any Moz/Smiths songs. This man is truly one of them.
Iīm sorry, but his voice was just WRONG WRONG WRONG. I didnīt bother to listen to any of his own songs, for good reason I believe, therefor I cannot say anything bad about his music in general.

I hope Morrissey did not authorise the remake of this song...please say it isnīt so!

I'm sorry to have gotten off on a bad foot with anyone...let alone Moz fans. I feel the need to clarify a couple of things.

I am only somewhat known locally (Chicago) and a relative nobody everywhere else. I have no publisist, record label, booking agent or manager. I do it all myself and probably always will.

I've not released the "Wide to Receive" cover on any professional work I've done. I posted that version on my website (which was recorded on the floor of my living room with a cheap microphone in a very no frills sort of way) in order to experiment with the idea of posting mp3's from my shows.

It's not the best representation of my voice...this I know. But I liked the feel of it (compared to other things I recorded that day) and wanted to try moving the minidisc recordings to mp3 and my website to see how it would work.

If you don't like my voice, I totally respect that. But, I don't think you've given me a fair shake if you haven't listened to my own perfessionally recorded material. The best example is the title track from my CD, the mp3 for which is at:
            http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/21/jeffrey_altergott.html

Your comments did modivate me to buy a condenser mic for home recording which I picked up this morning. I re-recorded the cover and moved it to my website this evening. It's still me on my living room floor practicing, mind you, but the recording quality should be better.

Thanks, though, to the person who likes my stuff enough to share it - that was really cool of you (whomever you are).
