well this is somewhat old news...but when nobody's sure about who thinks what about Moz, its good to know it by person.
I work at the international airport of Israel and there I saw Michael Stipe, coming back home from a vacation in Tel Aviv (to get some quiet and inspiration). He was short-bearded, short, and in short not very celebrity-looking.
Well I just approached and talked to him, got his autograph, told him I love his music and asked him, with a careful tone:
ME: Are you still in touch with Morrissey?
MS:You know, that's funny, because I only hung around with him for three days and everbody's asking me about him as if we've been married for eight years or something...
ME:You know, I ask because nobody really knows anything about his personal life, he's very discreet...
MS:Oh yeah, he's a weird guy, very strange... very intelligent but very strange.
Perhaps I've been a bit too apologetic, but it seemed to me strange to start ask him which Smiths/Moz songs he liked, why and how much he adores them, since he didnt bring the subject himself...
For REM fans, he said this trip was to find some quiet and inspiration to write songs and that they wanna get back to the studio...
I also asked about a song in "Up" which reminded me of "Suzanne" by Leonard Cohen... he said that he ripped off the melody from it (!) and that they went to court with Cohen`s lawyer and payed him!
Perhaps he was cynical, but he sounded dead serious... anyway thats for stopping the rumors... or maybe he wasn't telling the truth?
P.S. he left a half-eaten pear and a core of a peach... if that was Morrissey's, how much would you pay for that;)?
