News Release: STARS WANT FUR OUT OF VOGUE

For Immediate Release:
September 21, 2000

New York -- As PETA prepares for tonight's "Antidote to Fashion Week" party at SPA (with hosts Sandra Bernhard and Todd Oldham), the animal rights group is delivering to Vogue's Anna Wintour an anti-fur petition signed by the bevy of celebrities who feted PETA at the group's 20th anniversary bash last Wednesday at Hollywood's Viper Room. Dharma and Greg's Jenna Elfman and Thomas Gibson, Shalom Harlow, Tobey Maguire, Mark McGrath, Pamela Anderson and beau Marcus Schenkenberg, Bill Maher, Alicia Silverstone, Andy Dick, Chrissie Hynde, Morrissey, and Rosanna Arquette all signed the petition, which reads: "We, the undersigned, believe that there is nothing fashionable about killing animals for vanity."

At the SPA bash, Bernhard will send her own message via an anti-fashion anthem ("I Like You Better Undressed") that she wrote and will perform on stage with a cluster of "naked" models. The song, along with "Animal Kingdom" by Prince, served as the CD invitation to PETA's Fashion Week bash.

Let me get this straight, Morrissey:

    fur is bad, ok.
    leather is good, ok.

I know this debate has been going on forever it seems but this is what i was aware of:

        1. First of all, doesn't he wear pvc (however you spell it, but its fake leather)...like his pvc Elvis suit he wore in concert

        2. Didn't he state he would gladly buy alternative leather products, if they existed...

as for his furniture, i don't know and really don't care. I don't think this should be of any concern really. Lets try to evaluate everything you use or buy or eat. I'm sure someway or another we're contributing to animal products that either they been killed for cloth, testing, furniture, food, etc etc

wouldn't you say he's at least making a conscience effort to help...and that's frankly more than i can say...

Anyone here has the right to wear leather or fur in this world, so please give me a chance. Anyway, who do you think you are to tell me what to wear or not?.....any action has its own consequences, so let that be, if I have to answer to anyone, I am sure it won't be you.

Yes, Morrissey's Elvis-esque suit is PVC, not leather. Moz explained on several occasions that the suit was cut from a synthetic material. Appearently he has some more PVC stuff. In '92 or '93 there was an interview w/ Andy & Mike (ex-)Smith. One of them (can't remember which) spoke of recently encountering a "leather"-clad Morrissey. When he (Moz) was questioned about his cow-based coat, he said something to the effect of "It's a really good leather knock-off. The material is called [you guessed it] PVC."

i don't think anyone can ever say they have not, at any point in their lives, not used anything that didn't come from animals or contribute to their deaths in some way, it's practically impossible! therefore although moz may not be perfect in that way, no one can be, and he certainly does his darndest, and goes out of his way not to use animal products like leather, etc! so i think he certainly deserves some respect for his beliefs and willingness to product organisations who he shares these beliefs with. at least he has principles, right?

it's not really a matter of logic, my fellow anonymous-poster. leather is practical and often difficult to avoid when it comes to decent shoes.
i don't personally wear leather (with one exception since 1990), but i try to look at such things realistically...you can't expect every single person to be perfect, but i think they should try to do as much good as they can.

some people in the past have pointed out morrissey's supposed "hypocrisy" when it comes to the leather shoes and belts. they need to get over it. he has done so much to advance the cause of vegetarianism and animal rights, he can be excused a few shortcomings.

fur is another case. fur is not practical. it is not affordable. it sadly still has a prestige attached to it by lots of stupid people in the world.

basically, there is no excuse for fur, while there ARE excuses for leather shoes (even if still don't personally think they're good-enough excuses).

            Alternate pledge... (Score:0)
I would much rather have seen Moz and crew sign a pledge to this effect:

"There is nothing fashionable about supporting an organization (PETA) that resorts to sickeningly sexist advertising in its attempts to discourage the wearing of fur."

Don't get me wrong. I in no way support use of fur, but some of PETA's past advertising has been absolutely inexcusable, showing PETA (at a national level, at least) to be a very narrow minded organization. There are plenty of other worthwhile animal rights organizations out there. In my mind, it is extremely unfortunate that PETA happens to be the one that's "Hollywood hip".
