Manic St. Preachers and Oasis influenced by The Smiths

James Dean Bradfield and Noel Gallagher recently revealed to 2 UK magazines about how The Smiths' music influenced them when they were youngsters.

James D Bradfield in Melody Maker:
"For me, it was more for Johnny Marr's guitar playing. I had 'This Charming Man' and learned to play it and everyone was like 'He's the best guitar player in Poltlanfraith'."

Noel Gallagher in NME:
"This song [Asleep] from this band has probably influenced me more than any in this group. The song is actually about suicide, which I only found out in my later years. I didn't get it was about suicide at the time - I thought it was about going to sleep. But there you go."

god. How could you NOT know that song was about suicide????? "Don't try to wake me in the morning 'cause I will be gone...There is another world/There is a better world"
It took him YEARS to figure this out about his favorite song? I knew he was dumb... but I'm astounded.

that should make a nice tribute to the Smiths, one guy imitating TCM on guitar to impress the locals and another one developing a left hemisphere in the brain (that's where language comprehension should be processed).

I, for one, can now honestly declare that the MSP and Oasis influenced me and gave my life a new direction.

Noel Gallagher proves once again he is an idiot. The scary thing is that if Johnny hadn't met Morrissey, he would have been Noel Gallagher.

As for the Manics, it's a bit of a dense comment, but Bradfield is wonderful and underappreciated because of the whole Richey thing. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one west of the Atlantic that has heard of MSP let alone likes them.

now now, i think you're all being a little hard on noel. although asleep is so utterly blatantly about suicide, i actually think he's kind of clever and witty. whenever you read interviews with him he's really droll and funny and he does totally love the smiths, so i think the man can be forgiven. and oasis were good at first, although noel obviously never took any notice of morrissey's lyrics (seeing as all oasis' were terrible)and now....well, the less said the better.
