The Queen Is Dead #10 in Virgin All Time Top 1,000 Albums.
posted by davidt on Wednesday September 06 2000, @09:00AM

Does anyone here believe the Radiohead albums (The Bends #2, OK Computer #4) deserve such high rankings?

David T (different) writes: The Virgin All Time Top 1,000 Albums lists The Queen is Dead as No. 10 in the Chart. No doubt there will be other entries further down their chart, but I have only found details of the top 10 in a BBC news report: Radiohead gun for Beatles' Revolver.

I am going to have to be the first to decent with the list. Let us have a look:

      2. The Bends (?) -- Radiohead (good album, but not a top 10 canidate).

      3. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band -- (The Beatles "white" album was better).

      4. OK Computer -- Radiohead (see above)

      6. Automatic For The People -- REM (It isn't a top 10 album. The only consolation is that they spent themselves making this, and everything else afterwards was garbage).

Anyways, that's my oppinion. At lest one Smiths album made it there.

Both CD's are worthy in my humble opinion. The
Bends is an awesome piece of work. I am a bit
surprised at REM's automatic being so highly
charted. I don't have any problem with this
top 10, but Depeche Mode's Violator(or almost any of there albums) couldve been there instead of REM for sure. Ciao

radiohead is a great band, but i don't think two of their albums should take up top ten space. in this sense, i would have pulled out one of the radiohead albums - probably 'the bends'. not that it's a bad album, but i just seemed to like ok computer better.

secondly, QID should have been higher in the ranks. not necessarily number one (although QID is my all time favourite album hands down), but in the top five at least.

thirdly, why three beatles albums? why not just two or just the white album?

lastly, other lp's should have gone in spaces where other bands took too much room. i agree, joy division's "unknown pleasures" deserved a spot, as does depeche mode's "violator" or the cure's "three imaginary boys".

Looking at the whole Top 100, I was surprised to see that The Corrs were in there in there at 70-something with Talk On Corners. Certainly listenable-to (but better to look at) but that means that it's apparently better than Strangeways, Here We Come (unless I missed that), and better than all but three U2 albums...!! And better then Metallica-Metallica or It Takes A Nation of Millions... by Public Enemy, both listed but lower than the Corrs?

Which just goes to show how much these polls mean...remember the Music Of the Millennium poll when Ronan Keating (Boyzone) came 12 places higher than Moz for best songwriter?

All these polls provide something to talk about, but mean very little.
