Subject: [M] The Other Jake

I was a bit shocked to find out that the other Jake, the rockabilly haircut one, died recently under mysterious circumstances... whether it was a suicide, or something else, no one knows. there was an article in the OC weekly describing his rise and fall, and it does have a one sentence mention of Morrissey and Boz visiting his barber shop for a cut, so if anyone is interested, go to:

"Live Fast, Die Young - the rise and hard fall of rockabilly barber Jake Bricks"

UPDATE (July 18)- From Anna, the story in detail, as it appeared in this L.A. Times article, May 13:
Jail Escapee Kills Himself

Garden Grove man grabs a gun from a deputy in Anaheim, flees in a stolen car, then shoots himself.

By LOUISE ROUG, WILLOUGHBY MARIANO, Special to The Times

A jail inmate facing a "third strike" trial for burglary grabbed a sheriff's deputy's gun during a struggle early Friday before shooting at the officer and leading police on a high-speed chase through Anaheim that ended when he fatally shot himself, police said.

The inmate, Jake Glenn Bricks, 30, of Garden Grove, had earlier complained of pain after falling out of his bunk at the Theo Lacy Branch Jail in Orange, prompting the deputy to take him to Western Medical Center-Anaheim about 1 a.m.

After being treated, Bricks allegedly assaulted the unnamed deputy, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino. During the struggle, the inmate, whose feet were shackled but hands were free, wrestled the gun from the deputy and fired at him. He also pointed the gun at a passing nurse, Amormino said.

When the deputy took cover in the hospital's emergency room, the inmate jumped into a medical courier car and fled, officials said.

As Anaheim officers chased the man down Lincoln Avenue, they saw the muzzle flash from a gunshot inside the car, said Anaheim police Sgt. Joe Vargas. The car then swerved south across Lincoln, striking a parked car before stopping in a vacant lot, he said.

Officers yelled to the suspect but there was no response from the car; they found Bricks dead with a gunshot wound to his head. The chase ran for about 1 1/2 miles.

"It could have ended much worse," Vargas said. "He could have shot it out with the officers or injured someone else."

The Anaheim Police Department, Sheriff's Department and district attorney's office are investigating the incident.

Amormino said the inmate's hands were free because he had complained of dizziness, and the deputy feared he would faint and fall on his face if his hands were cuffed. Under Sheriff's Department policy, it is up to the deputy to determine whether both hands and feed are shackled, he added.

Western Medical Center-Anaheim is used by the Orange County Sheriff's Department for inmates who need medical attention.

Vargas said escape attempts have occurred before at the hospital, usually when an inmate is transferred from the emergency room to the patrol car.

"There have been escapes over the last years," Vargas said. "In most cases the suspects are quickly apprehended.

Bricks had a history of legal troubles, according to court documents. In 1997, he was convicted on burglary and drug charges and sentenced to prison and narcotics treatment.

Last November, Bricks was charged with his third burglary as well as possession of a stolen 9 millimeter pistol, a parole violation. A trial was scheduled for June. If convicted, he faced the possibility of life in prison.

There's a slight chance that Boz may have visited this barbershop--a slight chance--but there's no way that Morrissey ever stepped foot in there. I live about half a block away from where the babrber shop once was and stopped by every now and to conduct interviews with local musicians and never was Morrissey's name brought up in the shop. The closest Morrissey ever got to the area was when he played the UCI Bren Events Center about 20 miles away. I'd like to see how the writer of this article got his facts. If anything, the snobs that frequented this barber shop would probably talk sh1t at the thought of a Brit like Morrissey taking on rockabilly as some thought he did during his Your Arsenal period.

In response to the above message: while you are correct about the probable responses from regular customers about Morrissey, I had spoken to Jake himself about Morrissey, and he never made a negative comment to me. You must also remember that Jake didn't do all his cutting at the shop.

I am not including the following to soil Jake's name in any way, it just seems relevant to the topic of the OC Weekly report and Jake's connection with violence.

The last time I visited the shop for a cut, Jake was on the phone pacing back and forth from the back room to the store front and peering out the window from behind the drawn shade. A pistol was tucked into the front of his pants and his conversation with the friend on the other end of the phone was to the extent of having some automatic rifles brought over (AK47s if memory serves). This all seemed due to some comments that were exchanged earlier that day with some African-American gang members and who had been seen "driving by" shortly before my entrance.

I never did get my cut that day...

It was sad to hear the passing of Jake since he was always a cool cat when I frequented his barbershop back in the days. One could always head to Jake's to get one's mop chopped and listen to some great tunes blaring from the shop. As for Morrissey and Boz, I do remember seeing photos of them in the photo album Jake had lying around. I also have somewhere an article in the LA Times or OC Register(I forget which) of Jake and his barbershop. It does mention that Jake did once cut Moz's hair. Small world, indeed. On a side note, Jake's ex-sidekick at the shop, Eric, is now my barber at Hawleywood's in Costa Mesa.

After reading this story, I grabbed my Ouija board and asked Jake about it. He had this to say:
"For the record, I wasn't interviewed by anybody at all whilst in the car chase. And the very idea that I would conduct an interview in a car chase straight after doing a jailbreak is... imaginative! None of the responses in the Q&A section would be mine; I haven't written a novel, I would not refer to African American people as 'blacks', Carole Lombard did not kill herself, I certainly DO have new songs, and I DON'T listen to either Oasis or Prefab Sprout! So, as I hope people will realize, this interview was either completely made up, or took place with a "Jake" look-alike. However, the three strikes were correctly reported, so I did indeed shoot myself and I'm grateful for that."

P.S. I'm not too sure what he meant about Carole Lombard. This guy was very strange to talk to.
