Dagenham Dave writes:

In the current issue of Rolling Stone (RS 846), the one with Blink-182 on the cover, bassist Mark Hoppus drops a Smiths mention:
"In the ninth grade, Hoppus discovered the Cure and the Smiths, and through their music he found solace. He reflects, 'That was the first time I ever felt comfortable in my skin.'"

I think these mediocre bands name-drop Morrissey just so they can get mentioned on this site.

I've never heard anything in Blink 182's "music" that ever suggested being influenced by Morrissey or The Cure. More likely, it was the lure of big money dreams whispered by lugubrious managers knowing that Blink have the right combination of good-looks and trite lyrics to briefly extend the market life of current pop music.

God!! People who visit this site need to chill out! Whenever I hear that someone like Morrissey or The Smiths my first thought is "Wow great" not "oh, I don't like their music so they don't have a right to like Moz or they must be lying," etc. I guess I'm just not a, um...a jerk!

it's true. this is something of an epidemic around these parts of the popular music world. it has historically been the case that whenever anyone has mentioned morrissey as an influence an overwhelming majority of those that post a response react in an incredibly snobby and arrogant manner. it's astounding to me, especially in a website dedicated to an artist such as morrissey whose music has always dealt with the deeper aspects of the human experience. it's sad to find that so many of us still do not get the message. even if one doesn't fancy a given band's music that doesn't mean we instantly need to shed all traces of our human grace and basic respect for others. at the very least we ought to try to be intelligent in our criticisms and not belligerent. what do you all think?
