The Record Industry Association of America awards gold certifications for album sales exceeding 500,000 units.

UPDATE 6/21: After doing a little research, I found the other RIAA certifications:
Viva Hate: released 3/22/88 - certified gold 11/16/93
Hulmerist: released 7/24/90 - certified gold 01/18/91 (50,000 units for video)

Certifications must have been done a bit differently during The Smiths' era: The Queen Is Dead, Louder Than Bombs and "Strangeways, Here We Come" were all certified gold on 9/19/90.

i recall morrissey saying something to the effect of, 'that song was from an album called bona drag, for which i won no awards, and the world looked on in wonder as i did not receive any prizes...'

    congratulations!

I think Bona Drag should have gone gold the day it was released. Look at all the great songs that are on it. Each song on that album are masterpieces. Moz should get respect in the music indusrty, he is a collasoul talent like no other. No one even matchs him. Oh plus Brittany Spears only get those gold certifacates is because the record company goes out and helps her and goes and babys her and writes her songs for her. The record companies never supported Morrissey nor did he want there support. Morrissey is a self made man, he went out and he earned all his fame and money on his own, he didn't need any record company to hold his hand, like Brittany does. Morrissey is a real artist not a fake one like Brittany.

You know how some tapes, CD's just some how disappear from you collection. Well my congradulations to you Moz, it is a shame that you have not been recongnized sooner, and that just goes to show that your music is timeless, an album that was made almost 10 years ago is still being bought and discovered by younger generation! Now that's a real artist! Someone who attracts all ages and generations all the time! Let's see what Britney attracts when she's 40!!! Besides flies!!!

Plus i guess its not recongnized when people buy used cds.

I should of thought it should have sold more. That seems to be the cd all MOrrissey fans first buy. oh well. Heres to countless more of generation of fans to come.

I also wonder if Billboard actually charts an album's sale intensity (if that's the right word) - for instance, did sales rise dramatically as a result of this last tour?

                  I wonder...
