There is an article in the latest edition of the Radio Times( 1-7 May)-It is written by Mark Ellen form ‘Word’ magazine to promote a new BBC2 programme this Saturday: ‘I’m in a Rock ‘n’ Roll band’ . The programme ‘examines the constituent parts of the ultimate rock band- this week it’s the lead singer-culminating in a live show next month where industry experts discuss their favourite musicians and create the ultimate fantasy band’

There is a rather nice drawing of our Moz in his Smiths days, and when choosing his favourite singer, Ellen writes: ‘it’s probably just easier to go straight for the greatest living rock n roll matinee idol on the planet. The people’s poet. The effortless dispenser of philosophical maxims and deathless bons mots. He of the cantilevered hair. The funniest, sharpest, most mercurial man of the moment. Morrissey.’

Unfortunately I do not know if Morrissey will be featured on the programme-but it looks promising.

Also, on Monday 3/5/10 on Radio 2 at 8pm they review the programme, and this is followed by ’The record producers’ at 10pm, focusing on Stephen Street. It mentions Strangeways and Viva Hate and that Marr will contribute and: ‘Morrissey was, predictably unavailable for comment, though there’s a chance to hear some previously unaired demos by the inscrutable star’. Could be interesting.

Richard Allinson and Steve Levine profile the work of Stephen Street - whose production credits include The Smiths, Blur, Kaiser Chiefs, The Cranberries, New Order and Morrissey.

Featuring interviews with former Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr, Blur's Graham Coxon and Kaiser Chiefs' Ricky Wilson; the programme also has exclusive access to multitrack recordings of the Blur hits Girls & Boys and Parklife; and the first play of Stephen Street's rare songwriting demos for Morrissey.

The description "Stephen Street's rare songwriting demos for Morrissey" would imply these are the demos of Street's tunes which he then gave to Morrissey to write words to and not, as we might hope, demos of Morrissey singing (which Morrissey would have to approve broadcast of). So they are probably snatches of instrumentals.

It is also possible that the reason Street is publicly broadcasting these is in light of the "Vini Reilly controversy" as proof that Street really did write the music of Viva Hate.

Why else would Viny have said that, working and
playing on Morrissey first nmbr solo 1 chartalbum
would be enough to say 'I was there'

Another point is that not that much time after
Viva Hate, Morrissey and Street parted due royaltie issues and personal differences

So me thinks, the last Smiths album was just released, half year after the split.
Morrissey wanted to go on with the Smiths or with
another guitarplayer and tried, and didn't work.

So there's little time for Street and Morrissey
to had allready a concept album, with just some guitarparts and other instrument to finsih the
        'Street demoos'

So I'really think at the time Viny came in there wasn't that much done, he was the right man on the right place.

Don't wanna diss Street or cheer Viny, but just
trying to compare the facts and all what's written about it, and trying to analyse it

      Nice, succinct summary.

While "Jewel in the Crown" is not considered a very good documentary (particularly for failing to include either an interview with Morrissey or his music), it's still interesting to hear what some of the "supporting players" throughout his career have to say.

In Part 1, Street talks about how he came to send Morrissey those early demos:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc6Vc1lXAI0

In Part 2, the Viva Hate song writing controversy is looked at, with Vini Reilly calling said demos "appalling":

It will be very interesting indeed to hear what Street sent Moz in the post.

on Stephen Street he doesn't half know how to spin things out from his association with Morrissey. Countless interviews - copies of letters on his website - in fairness he does seem to be genuine fan and anything is better than nothing!
