BBC press release has confimed that Morrissey will be on the show on November 29th 2009.

It's on BBC Radio 4 - there's a link to the BBC page in the thread I started in General Discussion

Sunday 29 November
11.15am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4

This week's castaway is iconic singer-songwriter Morrissey.

Born in 1959, Steven Patrick Morrissey grew up in Stretford, Manchester, and enjoyed enormous success with The Smiths as the band's lyricist and vocalist and received media attention for his views on animal rights and vegetarianism.

He launched a solo career after the band's break up in 1987 and has 10 Top 10 singles to his name. Music magazine NME has described Morrissey as "one of the most influential artists ever".

Morrissey talks to presenter Kirsty Young about his life, his career and about how he would cope on BBC Radio 4's mythical desert island.

  • This is wonderful news! I wonder if his Desert Island Discs will be similar to his 'Under The Influence'??

  •   I was completing a portrait sitting with a well known politician, when he was talking about his time last year on Desert Island - he said Kirsty was very tough - and doesn't let people 'slip away' from giving answers to harsh personal questions . . . I hope she was gentle with our beloved Morrissey!
This will be very interesting but with Morrissey's music library - how did he ever choose which ones to 'rescue' in a storm?

  • Fantastic. Think where our boy was 10 years ago. Now he's in the bosom of the BBC establishment. V funny. I do hope that he doesn't get tempted to go too off the wall. At least one track from The Slider please Moz.x

  • Please someone post a link to a download when this is on since I will be unable to hear it and havent heard of this program before. BBCAmerica is all Monty Python and Blood in the Wire repeats. We are lucky if we get a five year old episode of Gordon Ramsey. For some reason he whispers in the UK. His American show is all screaming verbal abuse and Bleeps instead of foul language.

My guess - they are off limits

  • records by The Smiths have been on other guests' lists over the years? What about Moz-solo though?

I recall Boz saying he'd take Vauxhall -- was that an official guest spot on D.I.D. or just him saying what he would take?

    This is hugely exciting!

For those Moz fans not from the UK, Desert Island Discs is a institution. It's a radio show that has run since the 1940's. I remember thinking so many times, listening to it, "Oh, imagine if Morrissey was on one week, he's the perfect guest...."

    And now he is!

The theme of show is simple. The guest is a castaway on a desert island, and they must choose which records they have with them. Excepts are then played.

But this will wet your whistle. The castaway must also choose one BOOK and one LUXURY, and explain why.

Radio 4 sets the world standard for intelligent radio. I'm a Brit living in LA, and I love America, but this is something else... Morrissey will be THRILLED to have been asked on this show. It should be, or at least it could be, a pivotal interview.

So - guesses for BOOK? Guesses for LUXURY?

    Can't wait.

  • Great news. I'm looking forward to this.

I'm guessing there will be something by Sandie Shaw, Jobriath, New York Dolls, T. Rex, and maybe Gorecki (for some classical) Sex Pistols (he was at the life-changing Free trade Hall gig) or even his own stuff. Ed Banger and the Nose bleeds! Some 1950's Irish folk for his early childhood family roots maybe. Serge Gainsborough: something French from that era.

For his book he will take his own autobiographjy or 'James Dean in pictures,' and for his object a mirror so he can attend to his quiff.

  • This has made my day - after so much terrible news on this site of late - and so much bitchiness - this is really great news - can't wait. - And at the moment I bet Moz wishes he was on that desert island permanently.
As for choices - bit of John Betjeman? complete works of Oscar Wilde? Nancy Sinatra ? Bowie? New York Dolls? T Rex? - hope there are some surprises - but doubt if there will be any relevations

  • I have been hoping for this appearance for a long, long time. I love the 'My Top 10' programme Morrissey recorded with Andy Peebles when the Smiths were still new. He said then that he had a clump of about 50 singles that he couldn't possibly exist without.

He played some terrific tunes then, he's done 'Under the Influence' and 'Songs that saved your life' and he has the opportunity to play he favourites in gig intro tapes so really there probably won't be any big surprises. I hope he really plays the Desert Island discs game and chooses tunes that are sentimental to him or have great significance. I wonder if he dare choose one or more of his own tracks?

I hope there's a rapport between him and Kirsty. If he doesn't take kindly to her I fear it could be a very bad interview. She usually seems to be well informed about the interviewees but because the show has a wide audience she will have to introduce all the old topics and ask questions that most of us could answer for him. What were you like as a child? Why are you vegetarian? Will the Smiths ever reform? Will she dare to ask about his family?

If only Dr Anthony Clare were still with us and Morrissey could appear on "In the Psychiatrists' Chair". Now that would be terrific!

For all you people outside the British Isles: usually there is a 'listen again' facility on the BBC website where you can listen again to any programme that you have missed for up to 7 days after it is broadcast - but for music copyright reasons you usually cannot listen again to this programme and can only listen to it as it is actually broadcast on http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4 [bbc.co.uk]. Desert Island Discs is always broadcast twice in the week, in this case at 11.15 GMT on Sunday (29/11/09) and then repeated at 09.00 GMT on Friday (04/12/09). All you Latin American fans will have to get up very early to listen in. I am sure some kind soul will put it on YouTube though.

  • I reckon female singers will make up the majority of his chosen tracks: Cilla Black, Nico, Diana Dors, Sandie Shaw. As well as probably T Rex, New York Dolls and Sparks. I wonder will he play early Bowie or has he still not forgiven him for that Southpaw tour?

  • My 10 desert island discs would be

1 not alone - bernard butler. Always makes me feel happy, melancholic and distracted, all at the same time.
2 unchained melody - righteous bros. Timeless.
3 I Know It's Over - the smiths. Sums up an era in my life and the only song I never listen to in company.
4 Imagine - john lennon. Magical and never grows tired. Hopelessly naive and worldly simultaneously.
5 Nimrod - sir edward elgar. Peaceful and noble. Glorious.
6 Dancing Queen - abba. My 'Saturday night' record.
7 Pavane op. 50 - Faure. Beautific, elegant.
8 Death - Klaus Nomi. Enchanting.
9 Everyday is Like Sunday - Morrissey. I could comfmortably wake up to this song until the end of time or - more likely - the end of my life.
10 Borderline - Madonna. Good afternoon listening.

If I could smuggle in a couple of albums, I'd like to take 'aeroplane over the sea' by neutral milk hotel and 'years of refusal' by morrissey.
