'The Pageant of His Bleeding Heart' (Gavin Hopps) official launch THIS SATURDAY, Manchester (Nov. 7)

Bleeding Heartress writes:
There will be a formal launch of Morrissey: The Pageant of His Bleeding Heart, by Gavin Hopps, at 4 o’clock on Saturday 7th November, in the Manchester University branch of Blackwell (University Precinct Centre, Oxford Road).

The event will involve a live performance by the acclaimed tribute band The Smiths Indeed, a talk by the author, as well as wine and Morrissey fairy cakes.

All are welcome.

Here is what Simon Reynolds has to say about The Pageant of His Bleeding Heart:

‘The best book-length explication of Morrissey’s peculiar genius I’ve come across. Acute when it does address the music, it focuses mostly on Morrissey’s lyrical and vocal strategies (coyness, flirtation, caesuras and suggestive trailings away, irruptions of non-sense such as animalistic/Tourettic/comedic growls, ascent into nonverbal raptures of yodeling falsetto), then explores how these particular ways with words announce and embody a particular way of walking through the world; a life stance and ethic. Hopps managed to convince me that there’s hidden depths and often-missed mischief secreted within the later work’s deceptive slightness and can’t-be-arsed-ness. A majorly illuminating work.’

Hmmm. This Saturday do I go to Liverpool to see Morrissey or do I go to Manchester to eat a fairy cake and be bored to death?

Decisions, decisions...

this book is well worth getting. Either Morrissey's work is worthy of serious academic study or it isn't. If it is then its foolish to complain, as the dullard Uncle Skinny did, that the book was too academic

We were lucky enough to receive a promo copy of this book this summer. The most academic thing I've ever read on the beach. A few dubious links made but overall a right good read (in my humble opinion).

However, if it's fairy cakes you're after, come to November Spawned A Mozzer in Brighton on 20th November - purveyors of the original and best Mozcakes since 2004!! www.myspace.com/novemberspawnedamozzer

This is a fab book -- like nothing else out there and thank god for that. Amazing how mediocrities like Simon Reynolds, Len Brown and -- god-- Rogan -- get an easy ride yet when someone genuinely tries a different approach and treats Morrissey with due acadamic rigour, they just get stick. It's a hugely refreshing change from all the shoddy journalism. And dense with things to enjoy!

jump on the bandwagon Morrissey books

1 thing is only promosing, and that's Morrissey's
own bio, who I hope he gonna do a bit in his upcoming labeless years, label is not the problem
he'll find one, but he definately needs some time
out of the spotlights,a 2 year +/- a notebook carrying in a tacky bag, he start seriously
In 2013 it's his 25th year being solo, so around
2011 he can make his last album, a final tour
as Morrissey, and hopefully the end with a few
shows with Marr and other ones who still want
to be on stage with Him and worked with him
2015 he's 56, a good time to stop working and enjoy life
