MORRISSEY - MORRISSEY HALTS GIG TO REPRIMAND FAN

Article:

Rocker MORRISSEY halted a gig in Cambridge, England on Saturday night (16 May 09) to reprimand an unruly fan.

The concert-goer took exception to the singer's birthday wishes to his friend Julia, who was standing in the front row at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, and started hurling abuse at her and Morrissey.

It prompted the former The Smiths star to stop the gig and challenge the man.

The war of words continued until the singer's guitarist, Boz Boorer, stepped forward to swear at the fan and suggest he leave.

Morrissey then asked the crowd whether the disgruntled audience member should be ejected - and when they turned on the man, he left.

One concert-goer tells WENN, "I've been to loads of Morrissey gigs but I've never seen anything like this; the guy seemed to dislike the fact that this Julia woman, who Morrissey often mentions at concerts, had a lot of money. I've never seen Morrissey turn on a fan like this."

This is just disgraceful. Although the punter should have kept his mouth shut, that doesn't excuse Mozzer's and Bozzer's behaviour. If a member of the audience repeatedly shouts abuse, that's a matter for the bouncers, not for the artists on stage. To entice the crowd to turn against one individual...it just beggars belief. This is yet another shameful new low in the spiralling decline of a once great artist.

Maybe this is Morrissey's daughter. It's just so silly at this stage of the game, to keep her identity hidden. Everyone knows 'about her' but why not just spill the beans and shut everyone up. I can see the fan's curiosity about Julia, but he certainly shouldn't be rude (oh, forget it. Like I've said a billion times - Most of Morrissey's fans ARE rude). It's human nature to be curious and maybe a bit envious. Hey, if she's rich and can follow him everywhere - so be it! I'd do the EXACT same thing if I could afford it. I actually did this with Metallica all throughout the 90s and that's why I am broke now! Keeping secrets is stupid. Julia is too much of a 'public figure' by default. Someone do an interview with her and answer questions once and for all. Gee Whiz, what's she got to hide? Hmmm....

Regardless of what means brings her to every Morrissey show, I think that if any of us won the lottery, were independently wealthy or just fortunate enough to be a life-long supporter of something that we're very passionate about - we should be applauded, not jealously lashed at...

Yes, in a unique way, Julia has become part of the Morrissey story - and in a way, it's adorable... but for those who become upset with her, fabricate stories about her demeanor at concerts or speak out in anger on behalf of the artist/fan relationship of her and Moz - Moz has every right to defend his decisions, his life. If you decide to bring these issues up and interrupt his performance, HE can do whatever he'd like to defend his friend. How can anybody have the nerve to criticize anybody for standing up for a person that they care about? Was he just supposed to ignore this squealing pig of an audience member??

I'd met Julia back in 97/98 or so at a show in SF. She was surprised that I knew who she was (back then), and I recall her fanzine that she'd use to publish. She was incredibly polite, very mild-mannered and as harmless as it gets. If she's fortunate enough to know Morrissey and see every single show - by all means: I applaud her... and to the heckler at the show - please don't waste our time (or Moz/Julia's at shows).

There is such a cutthroat hierarchy between so many of those that fall into the irregular regular category, and its all so strange since most me these people will never ever know him. The fact that he has made some kind of effort to consider Julia a friend says enough right there. It seems that any of the chosen few that he has taken a larger liking to get singled out for abuse and backstabing by others in this scene. It's frightening and sad to watch really. He seems to gravitate towards those who he sees some aspects of his own personality in, or those who he finds interesting in some way or another. Obviously, Julia falls into one of those categories, and there's nothing anyone can do about that. The nature of fandom is extreme by any means, but Morrissey fans take the cake.
