Morrissey has his own technical crew to set up the sound equipment for each gig but his management often hires some local helpers. They are not allowed to bring any meat into the venue. I can recall some local lad in Glasgow wanting to have his bacon sandwich for lunch - but he was asked to go outside! And this was about mid-day......hours before Morrissey arives.

Steamed veg, brown bread or brown bread rolls, crisps, Organic Orange juice, boiled potatoes, tea, choc biscuits (English), good quality red wine, sparkling mineral water, english butter.

I wish he would have demanded that rule at the HOB in Myrtle Beach. The people who showed up an hour before the doors opened and lined up for hamburgers and hotdogs got in earlier than those of us who had waited for 12 hours and didn't eat anything...

Are egg sandwiches "vegetarian"? I like nothing more than a bread roll with egg & mayo & black pepper & salad cream.

Wherever you go, the only veggie options are normally egg or cheese. And after a while cheese gets very boring.

Even though I'm a vegetarian I think it's wrong to disrespect those that are not vegetarian by banning meat from a venue.

I don't have a problem with vegetarianism, but his tactics do smack of fascism. Let's see how quickly this comment gets censored now.

Stars of all levels of fame are notorious for making demands everywhere they go. Mariah Carey demands certain types of flowers, only one brand of mineral water and that staff 'address' her correctly wherever she is, Elton John has had walls knocked through to allow him access from a certain point of the venue, the less said about Madonna and Britney and their extensive demands of the venue staff, the better and a VERY popular author is an absolute t**t with his demands when he does a book signing (yet lovely to his fans). However, fans of these people don't pick up on a story and bitch about their chosen star every time he or she makes their (often frankly ludicrous) demands.

In comparison to these people, the request that FOR ONE DAY people don't bring meat to work is tame. For god's sake, are people such ardent carnivores that they can't go without meat for one day to please someone who is (albeit indirectly) paying their wages? If you went to dine at the home of a strict vegetarian (whether they make that choice for religious or personal reasons) would you insist that they cook you meat? If you went to see a teetotaler perform and they'd banned alcohol from the venue would you find that unreasonable? I suspect some people would, but it's only the same sort of thing. A teetotaler doesn't want to be distracted by the smell or sight of alcohol, ditto a strict veggie and the smell or sight of meat. Effectively a venue becomes a stars personal space for that one day and, within reason, they should be able to make that space their own.

As a vegetarian I don't necessarily agree with Morrissey's request. But, he doesn't stop his crew or venue staff eating what they want when they're off the busses or out of the venue. If he were having them spied on etc then that would be ridiculous. If they were really bothered by the no meat request wouldn't they just go and work for someone else? And if the venue staff were bothered, wouldn't they just bring meat anyway or call in sick that day? They might have thought the request was a little odd, but if they all did as they were asked then it can't have upset them can it? It's hardly fascism when people have options.

To be honest I applaud Morrissey for sticking to his beliefs for all these years. In this current celebrity saturated culture most 'big' stars chop and change as often as they wash their hair. One day it's Kabbalah, macrobiotic diets and perfumes, the next it's Buddhism, reinvention as a fashion designer and adopting foreign babies. It seems people either want their celebrities as changeable as the wind, so they can copy every last 'in vogue' move, or as bland as Leona Lewis, The Killers or Arctic Monkeys; just turn up, play your 'music' and never say, or do anything that hints at the fact that you might have beliefs or personalities.

And to those people crying fascism and comparing Morrissey to Hitler, do you realise how ridiculous you sound? It's almost Pythonesque. If you were really concerned with the rise of fascist views then you might want to get involved in real poilitics.

Fat does not just come from meat my challenged poster as you imply, remember using the resources of animals without killing them does not in anyway contravene vegetarianism, which includes cheese and milk, also Morrissey is not fat, out of shape, brain damaged, hypocrite or vegan etc, just normal, he is more stylish and happier than you'll ever be, choice no longer comes into it.

At least he 'cares' about Animals in an ethical way.

as for the out of shape bit, i believe that may be due to his herbivore lifestyle. some in the scientific community say that the stomachs of herbivores increase in size due to the fact that digestion takes longer to get the necessary nutrients out of all those plants. thus showing that at least Moz is getting all his vitamins and minerals.

as for him not being a vegan, so freaking what. nobody's perfect and at least he's doing something. maybe it's not enough please the vegan hierarchy but he'll probably draw more attention to their cause than most others will and therefore serving the cause.
