Atlanta Cancelled

Tonight's performance in Atlanta has been canceled. This hasn't been officially announced yet, but will be in a few short hours I would hope. Without betraying any trusts, I will say this news is 100% legit.

This news should come as little surprise to those who were in attendance to last night's gig, but Morrissey's voice is gone and he would not be able to perform tonight under any condition.

I know some people will be traveling to Atlanta, so I thought it be only fair to mention the fact that the show has been canceled. This decision was reached some time last night, and I personally find it offensive that this news wasn't put out to the fans immediately, as they are the ones most affected.

Moz's PR firm "Girlie Action" is a known joke, and will no doubt spin their usual line of hastily written b.s. at the last possible minute, but take it from me —this tour is in serious trouble.

Variety Playhouse site confirms the show is cancelled. Link posted by AllYouNeedIsMoz in the forums (original post):

Tonight's show with Morrissey is cancelled.

As you probably know, the first 4 dates of the tour were cancelled due to illness. He did the show last night in Myrtle Beach and apparently had a great deal of trouble, cutting his set in half. As of now, we do not have a make-up date but hope to re-schedule for the Fall.

Refunds are available at the point of purchase.

  • ...I only wish he would not have been so cocky on his My Space Blog....

"I have survived the interrogation of Atlanta's immigration officials and Myrtle Beach shall have me tomorrow nite (Friday), and the world from then onwards ... if the world can take it.

He meant: "If my voice can take it"

"One of the many penalties of being human is that tours often take a military push to start, well, all of our answers will be in our songs tomorrow night. The bloodbath starts at 7.30. Life is testing you out. Be ready for anything."

"Be ready for a slew of canceled shows" would have been more appropriate.

We all understand that people get sick and clearly we can see that he really is. All the fans would like to hear is a brief heartfelt apology and explanation. It's just a nice thing to do. The fans will understand.

What I don't understand is that for someone who gets sick as often as he does, why he schedules so many shows in a row without a decent break in between. The man is 50 yrs old...that would be hard on anyone...does he really think he can pull that off? My guess is there are many more canceled shows to come.

Thanks for the heads up on Atlanta...I know the fans who plan to travel from far away will appreciate it. Lord knows Morrissey would not be as considerate.

Despite his poor record I still look forward to catching a couple of shows....as risky as it is!

  • Moz really needs to learn how to communicate to his fans. He has to get new PR people. In the last few years and especially with this new album, he's been having somewhat of a comeback... but he's just pissing off his fans, even the ones that are aware of his antics. Hope he feels better soon and makes up for all this bullshit.

  • I feel very sad, to be honest, sitting over here in Dublin, Ireland reading this news.

There was a lot of very busy publicity exposure before the start of the tour. Concern about live reception for the new album which is perhaps the most personal and emotional yet, and therefore demanding, would raise tensions. The impatience of fans and heightened speculation about his condition would have been no secret. Any issues with the band's musical unity would not have helped. All of this could only aggravate whatever ailment has befallen Morrissey, which we can only hope will be shortlived after another wee rest under tlc.

    Life is a Pigsty.

Oh to hear his healed singing voice and see him smile and dance again!

While I hate to hear this as much or more than most, I do care that the man is well again and fully recovers from whatever it is he is suffering from. This might well be the first tour in the last twenty years that I don't see Moz at least once, but it truly does sound like he's in a bad way here, and it is what it is.

Moz, I know you actually do read these posts- just know that the vast majority of us, while upset at the thought of missing you this time around, understand and genuinely hope you are OK. And those who are throwing a fit are just extremely let down and will get over it. I suppose it's what happens when people look forward to something for a very long time, spend money, travel, etc, and then this, but as we know... shit happens.

Don't let this affect the rest of your tour- take the time you need to recover fully and then... come back with a vengeance and show us all yet again how great you truly incredible you are live.

  • Someone on this website quite astutely pointed out the SERIOUS vocal flaws in the Jimmy Kimmel performance of SISMS. I was quite worried, and when he cancelled the beginning of the tour I'm obviously concerned that he may be ill, but more concerned that maybe it's not illness, but the beginning of the loss of his vocal instrument. This could be way more serious than we all think. Let's just all pray it's temporary.

  • cry wolf, and cancel so many times that you use up your sick day vouchers. Morrissey has simply bitten off more than he can chew. You have to keep yourself in better shape than he does to tour at 50.

Morrissey has never been a picture of perfect health. The man has not only exhibited consistent mental weakness when things don't go his way, but his intestinal fortitude is the worst of any performer I have ever seen. He is perpetually ill.

Part of this can probably be attributed to what I can only imagine is a terrible diet, and an overall inability to psychologically pull through episodes that many performers deal with all the time. When Morrissey performs at less than 100%, he tends to express a tinge of resentment towards his fanbase, as if it's their fault that he has to perform.

What this comes down to is whether or not he will reschedule, as he should, if he expects to convince anyone that his performances are more than just one big business venture. Considering his past actions, he's just not that kind of guy. Far too often, Morrissey's conscience seems non-existent.

I think that's what many fans have trouble with. The cancellations are often pathetic, but a little communication goes a long way. It shows that you actually care; whether it's required or not.

You're right, he's hitting 50 - all the more reason why he should SLOW DOWN and give HIMSELF a break! He should stop trying to fulfil the kind of touring schedule a 20yr old would struggle with since his voice clearly isn't up to it any longer. Sure, he owes us nothing, but equally, to repeatedly bail out of these long tours, when he knows fans pay airline tickets/hotels etc is just totally unacceptable. Sure, it's the fans' choice whether or not to travel - but Moz knows full well the kind of obsessively devoted following he has (whether or not he understands it), and it's getting past insulting now, it's getting embarrassing.
