Re: Southpaw Grammar/Maladjusted reissues Official press release excerpt on Maladjusted: ‘Maladjusted’ Released in 1997, ‘Maladjusted’ was the follow up to ‘Southpaw Grammar’. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, the album features Morrissey’s most successful single in the decade between ‘Vauxhall and I’ (1994) and ‘You Are The Quarry’. ‘Alma Matters’ reached No.16 in the UK chart and was followed by the equally superb ‘Roy’s Keen’ and ‘Satan Rejected My Soul’. Well received by critics and fans alike, ‘Maladjusted’ merges Morrissey’s ballad craft with the glam-rock of his earlier work. As with ‘Southpaw Grammar’, Morrissey has been actively involved in re-issuing ‘Maladjusted’. The album includes a new sleeve, b-sides, extensive liner notes by the artist, rare images and a completely different track sequence. This version also contains the controversial ‘Sorrow Will Come In The End’, which was withdrawn from the original British release. The track features Morrissey intoning, rather than singing, over a backing of manic strings and the beat of a judge’s gavel – an obvious reference to The Smith’s bitter royalties dispute. Tracklisting: 1. Maladjusted 2. Ambitious Lovers 3. Trouble Loves Me 4. Lost* 5. He Cried 6. Alma Matters 7. Heir Apparent* 8. Ammunition 9. The Edges Are No Longer Parallel* 10. This Is Not Your Country* 11. Wide To Receive 12. I Can Have Both* 13. Now I Am A Was* 14. Satan Rejected My Soul 15. Sorrow Will Come In The end * B sides

I don't know why Morrissey is so keen to instigate such a radical overhaul. Let time judge the original LP. Maladjusted is a fine work, just as it is. I can't understand why Morrissey doesn't stand by it. And time has been very kind to Maladjusted.
No Roy's Keen? No Papa Jack? Huh? It's interesting how Maladjusted compares to Southpaw, their differences and similarities. Maladjusted still has its powerful moments, still has an edge in places (esp. on the title track which sets the tone of the LP). But it's also a much lighter album as well, and Roy's Keen is vital for keeping that breezier touch. And as for Papa Jack... This is one of Maladjusted's key tracks. It's especially poignant listening to this song now, in light of Morrissey's comeback in the '00s which saw many of those "kids" he refers to in the lyrics return to him. And Alma Matters should follow the title track - it's such a great opening one-two punch!
Ending with Sorrow Will Come In The End? How about dropping it all together. Putting it at the end of the LP draws far more attention to it than it deserves (it was better served by being followed by Satan Rejected My Soul, a bit of light relief), and sours the album's quiet heroism and strength with rank bitterness.
I'll buy it of course (hopefully the sound will have been cleaned up a bit, better to draw out all the detail and nice touches in the production and playing), but overall I don't think this reissue as it stands is really the best tribute to Morrissey's most underrated long player.

Mancunian minstrel of melancholy Morrissey is set to re-visit his past with expansive re-issues of his albums 'Southpaw Grammar' and 'Maladjusted'.
With 'Years Of Refusal' released last month to widespread acclaim Morrissey's creative standing has rarely been higher. Since the Smiths split in 1987 Morrissey's solo career has been a rollercoaster of thrills, spills and mis-understandings.
One of the most neglected periods of Morrissey's career is the mid 90s. With Britpop acts riding high in the charts and Morrissey out of favour with the music press 'Southpaw Grammar' and 'Maladjusted' slipped out un-noticed but both are fascinating insights into the singer's career.
Released in 1995 'Southpaw Grammer' was Morrissey's prog rock inspired riposte to Britpop. Containing lengthy songs and huge arrangements it is one of Morrissey's most daring releases.
'Maladjusted' meanwhile slipped out almost un-noticed in 1997. Steeped in the glam rock of the singer's youth, it is an unjustly neglected part of Morrissey's canon.
Re-released with bonus material and sleevenote written by Morrissey himself, these albums shed some much need light on a lesser known aspect of the singer's career.
Morrissey will release an expanded version of 'Southpaw Grammer' on April 27th, with 'Maladjusted' to follow on May 4th.

So, why is it being included now? Can it be summized that:
a) the court battle is officially over and no futher suits are pending.
b) Moz doesn't care and is placing it there just out of good old-fashion spite or;
c) Mozmic thinks too much and sees conspiricy in everything.

The first time was when I heard "Sorrow Will Come In The End."
It all seemed to coincide with Morrissey using fewer lyrical ideas from other sources. He appeared to be having a go at writing more, and more of his own lyrical phrases. Unfortunately, that might be why they have seemed so uninspired.
Supposedly, some of the songs on "Maladjusted" were written around the vocal melodies, which were laid down first. It didn't work.
Above all, it was strange to hear such harsh production on a Lillywhite album. It could have been the result of having engineer Danton Supple in charge of mixing the album. Supple was even billed as the producer on some of the b-sides, which came with the same brittle sound.
Hey, maybe Morrissey truly wanted a sharper modern rock sound, and decided to once again sabotage a producer's efforts. Who knows? It certainly was a poorly mixed album. "Satan Rejected My Soul" could have been a stand out track without all of the muddiness.
Above all, "Maladjusted" signaled the decline of Morrissey's lyrical consistency.
Say what you will about "Kill Uncle," but at least it provided a proper atmosphere for Morrissey's vocals, and still contained much more poetry than any of his recent efforts.
