Mozipedia: The Encyclopaedia of "Morrissey" and the "Smiths" - Waterstones

Synopsis Steven Patrick Morrissey is one of the most original and controversial voices in the history of popular music. With The Smiths, he led the most influential British guitar group of the 1980s, his enigmatic wit and style defining a generation. As a solo artist, he has continued to broach subjects no other singer would dare. Worshipped by some, vilified by others, Morrissey is a unique rock and roll creation. The 300,000 words of "Mozipedia" make this the most intimate and in-depth biographical portrait of the man and his music yet. Bringing together every song, album, collaborator, key location, every hero, book, film and record to have influenced his art, it is the summation of years of meticulous research. Morrissey authority Simon Goddard has interviewed almost everybody of any importance, making "Mozipedia" the last word on Morrissey and The Smiths.

Interesting read, but... (Score:0)
...I'm really afraid that Years of Refusal will be TOO LOUD. It will surely become Morrissey's loudest studio album to date (discounting any remasters, of course).

“Music released today typically has a dynamic range only a fourth to an eighth as wide as that of the 1990s. That means if you play a newly released CD right after one that’s 15 years old, leaving the volume knob untouched, the new one is likely to sound four to eight times as loud."

Its funny how in this day and age of super sophisticated technology, year after year, quality seems to drop further down the list of priorities.

544 pages? 300,000 words? Great cover?

This might just be a must.

Oh, that reminds me. A friend and I were playing a game the other day called 'Invent A Morrissey B-Side Title.' Basically you have to come up with a fictional title that could easily be a recent flip track to a new Morrissey release.

I got reminded of this when I wrote 'This Might Just Be A Must' above, because that could be one. 'We Might Just Be A Must' or 'He Might Just Be A Must' perhaps would suit better.

Anyway, have a go yourselves! It's easy! A few tips...

Come up with a popular saying like "Everything comes out in the wash" and simply reverse it; "Nothing Comes Out In The Wash" - Da-Daa! Morrissey B-Side!

Or change a word in a popular phrase to better suit and sound funny, for example the phrase "the north shall rise again" can easily be changed to "The North Shall Despise Again".

Forgetting puns, just come up with titles that sound right.

      'Lurching Sidelong'
      'Willing It Off'
      'Mischievous Miles'
      'Look Without Laughing'
      'Withering Heights'
'From One Hand Fell A Letter Bomb'
'She Sang Of The Much Missed'
      'Hardly Able'
      and
'My Hand On The Tiller' for example.

      I mean, you can come up with HUNDREDS. My friend managed the best though;

      'Abominable Houseguest'

Tell me you wouldn't kill to hear Morrissey release 'Abominable Houseguest'!?

I wish the Smiths really were influential. Just a thought.

This chap is trying to be the Mark Lewisohn of The Smiths. Trouble is, he's not got a musical background and so his detailing of, for example, chord progressions makes him sound like an amateur amd a poseur. With a few notable exceptions (Shoplifters, Panic), The Smiths' sound had nothing to do with chord riffs but delicate and extraordinary melodies played out like some celestial arpeggio. Also, failing to mention the woeful inadequacies of some of Morrissey's early melodies and singing is either because he's being over-generous (and therefore dishonest) or because he can't hear them. Morrissey sings out of tune on several songs: I Want the One I Can't Have, Shakespeare's Sister, I Know It's Over, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. After that, we have to wait until the outro of Wide to Receive to hear some off-key Moz. I think there was a certain dishonesty from Morrissey and Marr about their songwriting process - the credits state Words ny Morrissey and Music by Marr, yet Morrissey made up all of the sung melodies (which explains their banality). One day I shall compile a full list of identical sung phrases in the work of The Smiths.
