MORRISSEY
Viva Hate

I'll wrap up this sextet of reminiscences with an encounter that had parallels to the Second Coming of Christ if you were a music fan who came of age in the '80s. The day that Morrissey entered our shop, every employee (male & female) made a mad dash to the M section of Rock (rumor had it that the Moz wouldn't sign Smiths CDs). I joined the throng (I actually missed the Smiths phenomenon and had gotten into Morrissey during his solo career), and proceeded to snatch up a copy of Viva Hate. Morrissey (along with some record company guy he had in tow) approached the information booth while I was still fumbling around looking for a pen. He was taller than I expected, somewhat shy, and very polite. He was looking for anything that we had by the band Generation X (Billy Idol's old outfit). Of course, we were fresh out of this band, but I took the opportunity to ask Morrissey to autograph my CD, and he graciously accepted. As we were having this exchange, the record company guy made a big display of asking me if I would like to see Morrissey play in Los Angeles again (it had been a little while since his last L.A. show, and I think that he was between labels at the time). I replied "of course," but the whole scenario was a little creepy and I could definitely tell that Morrissey was embarrassed. So we shook hands and went our separate ways. As I was standing in the info booth later that day, I looked over my signed copy of Viva Hate and smiled. I didn't have much, but I had this...and I still do.

  • Nice one Mac. But do you think you could have taken the film off the cd first before having him sign it?

A prized possession to be sure, but the plastic on those cds will age alot quicker than the actual paper that image is printed on. How do you store that thing? Airtight container? Plastic sleeve? Honus Wagner thinks you can't take care of that good enough.

  • Thanks for sharing...it would have been funny if you had told the record guy "No, don't really care, just gonna turn around and sell this autograph copy of Viva Hate...should make a killing!" Of Course, you had it personalized..shame...shame...well, hopefully, he will take the hint and play more shows!!! I'm glad your meeting Moz was a pleasant experience...

  • If the guy is talking about working at the Rhino in Claremont Village, then this happened about 10 years ago and the Village Idiot zine had a one pager on this. I remember walking in the store one day and the guy I knew that worked there told me I shoulda been there a few days ago because Morrissey had dropped by. I couldn't believe him...Morrissey visiting my neck of the woods in the 909!

  • Perhaps Moz should do another 10 night run for the Palladium when it re-opens. Thatd be real nice considering I live only a few blocks away and wont have to drive for hours and hours. Either way, just more LA shows would be nice.

  • ... he was looking for Generation X! Very good choice, I love the "Kiss me deadly" album.

  • I met Morrissey at last years Atlantic City *rescheduled* show. He was actually quite normal and average. We chatted about music, we chatted about diet and politics. He told me how much he enjoyed my lack of star-struckness. I told him I was actually a diehard obsessive fan, and for the longest time, but understood a thing or two about fame and being in the spotlight 24/7. He laughed and thanked me for being so kind and thoughtful. And then he departed with a twist on a self quote, "There are brighter sides to life", with the emphasis on "are" and then, "And I should know", with the emphasis on "I". He's not unloveable.
