Today The World Became A Lot Less Musical - himynameismark.com
one of my best friends passed away today. jerry finn was one of the most talented, funniest, coolest, smartest, and honest people i’ve ever known. he was true in every sense of the word. true in his love of music, true in his friendships. jerry loved life. he was happiest when quietly making music he loved, and loudly making fun of everything he didn’t. when i think of times spent with jerry, all i can think of is us laughing. so much laughter. he’s just one of those guys with the quickest wit in the room. he also knows more about music than anyone. and i mean that seriously. he knows musicians, instruments, amplifiers, recording equipment, engineers, producers, albums, and studios like some people know sports statistics. jerry could tell you who played what instrument on which track of pretty much any album you could name, and then go on to tell you who produced it, who engineered it, in what room of which studio, and so on. it’s really kind of amazing. he worked on many of my favorite albums of all time, and helped shape the sound and direction of blink-182 from enema of the state all the way through to the end and into +44. he was into family guy, south park, and mr show before anyone else had even heard of those shows. and when my son was born, while everyone else was sending us baby blankets and teddy bears, jerry and his girlfriend gave him a tiny extra small black leather jacket covered in metal studs and ramones pins.

i’m sitting here now and i don’t even know what to type. i’m at a loss for words. nothing i can say will come close to describing what an amazing human being jerry was. his talent, his laughter, his love of life. every day i spent with jerry over the past ten years i feel like he taught me something new about music, or recording. or life. i think everyone who knew jerry would say the same thing. i feel blessed to have worked with and learned so much from him. but most of all i am honored to call him my dear friend. jerry, i miss you already.

My prayers. My Love.

Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it onto future generations.

Jerry Finn
March 31, 1969 -August 21, 2008

after 43 days of fighting at 5:25 am Jerry passed away and has left us to go to that "better place" wherever that is. the family thanks everyone for all the love and support for Jerry through this time. A memorial for Jerry will be planned in the next couple months and all are invited to attend. i will let you know. i said my goodbye to Jerry this morning with Jen and Karin and Jerry had the most beautiful, peaceful smirk/smile of pride and accomplishment it was truly amazing. it was the sense of pride in the life's work he did that he would never talk about or show, but today i saw it. mike fasano

  • He had an insanely varied career doing something he enjoyed enthusiastically.

I'm not sure if Morrissey was particually a best fit for his style but his work with other bands exemplified a great talent.

    RIP Man

One of the people who helped make the world a better place. I wish he could have stayed much longer. The world is blessed that he was here for a while.

Times like these surely make one hope that there is some truth in the believe of some that souls come back.

May he be at peace and I love this line from above:

  • Jerry,

your friend Mike paints a beautiful picture and I'm sure you were every part the being he describes. So young and so talented but it sounds to me like you packed in enough goodness for a few lifetimes.

    rip.

can someone please put up a list of albums Jerry worked on? Iam only aware of his recent work with Moz and Blink 182. I would love to see his catalogue.

    thx.

  • But this guy left behind some great work. A lot of people slag him off becuase of a few of the artists he's worked with...seeing Green Day and Blink 182 as beneath their scope...which is the worst kind of elistist masturbating. Both those bands have released some incredible pop music.

Destination Failure fleshed out the Smoking Popes into 3, 4, 70 dimensions of sound. And the summer I met my wife, I (il)literally wore out the tape deck in my car lsitening to Blink's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket.

Not to mention the fact that god only knows how important Jerry Finn was to Morrissey's comeback. Say what you want about Mozzer's new sound, but never has he sounded so brash and loud and alive.

When the world finally gets to hear Years of Refusal, I'm sure that it, the combined efforts of two of rock's greatest auteurs, will be the best elegy that Jerry Finn could have asked for.

  • Today is a very sad day for me, and for Tiger Army. Our friend and producer, Jerry Finn, has passed away. As you may have heard, Jerry suffered a brain hemorrhage in July. The month plus following his hospitalization was full of ups and downs –
from no hope, to cautious optimism and ultimately the heartbreaking news that he was never going to recover. His death was incorrectly reported by a number of publications when his family had to make the incredibly difficult and brave decision to remove him from life support. He left this world Thursday morning, August 21st.

I've felt that our latest album Music From Regions Beyond was our finest to date since ever it was made and Jerry played no small role in that. He brought an incredible energy and enthusiasm to the studio every day during the making of that record that I could draw on anytime my own energy got low. While every album has been an arduous process for me, he made it the easiest it had ever been. He didn't want to change our songs or our sound, he just helped us to sound the best we ever have on record.

As we became friends I came to know him as one of the smartest, funniest people I've ever met. His generosity, humor and spirit were every bit as amazing as his talent in the studio. I related to him about so many things, a very rare thing for me with anyone I meet. I remember discussing with the AFI guys how it was almost like we had grown up with him in Ukiah, that unique wavelength we're all on. From the laughter to the Music From Regions Beyond cake he had made for the album wrap party, there were so many good times before and after the album. After Warped '07 we returned to the studio with him to record a cover of a song on The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack for Disney. No word on when it will see the light of day. I can't believe it'll be the last thing we ever record together. Nonetheless, I feel both lucky and honored to have known him and worked with him.

Jerry loved his friends and family, and he had a true passion for music, still after all his success. I'll always be grateful to him for taking a chance on us when he was offered projects with so many more well-known bands. I'm confident that his place in history is secure. His work speaks for itself. He valued the old ways of doing things in an age when technology has become a substitute for talent. Music has never needed him more than it does now. He was not only one of the best producers in rock'n'roll, but one of the best people I've met in this world. Until we meet again, my friend.

  • This is such sad, horrible news, even if it's maybe best that Jerry Finn isn't suffering any longer, has been spared being in a vegetative state indefinitely, and has moved on to a "better place." This whole situation is the sort of thing which makes one rail at the heavens with clenched fist; why him, why at such a young age, why now.... Life Is Never Kind.

  • I can only imagine how hard this must be for the family and friends.
I went through something similar with my mother.
She also had a brain tumor..
Had a stroke, was on life support.
    But was gone..
We had her taken off the life support..
    and she just expired..
I was angry and wanted to just die,
    for very long.
    Yet,I figured,With time....
How could I have my nerve to want to die when there is just so much for me to live,
even before somewhere I go to a place,
    I do not even know.

It all (Life) really takes guts...

My best to Jerry Finn's family and friends
and Thank you for showing your loving concern.

    Truly
    Marisela

    Let's hope...

Here are a few words that have helped me much since my mother passed away. I'd love to share them now.

"To Fear death, is no other than to think oneself wise when one is not,
to think one knows what one does not know.
    No one knows.
No one knows whether death may not be the greatest of blessings for a man,
yet, men fear it as if they knew that is the greatest of evils.
And surely it is the most blameworthy ignorance to believe that one knows what one does not know."

And to the those knocking Moz for not putting out a statement, since when did he ever put out a public statement about any close friends of his who died? This is perhaps a private matter for him. We should let him deal with it as such. And it is very respectful of him to allow the family/closer friends to be the ones to make the public statements.
