It has just been confirmed that Morrissey will appear (for the first time) in Israel on July 29th as part of his European greatest hits tour. As 'we' were waiting for the man for over 20 years, it will definitely be sold out!!

As a Jewish American and a liberal one at that I still respect Israel's right of sovereignty and from that their duty to protect their citizens. While I feel they should give the Palestinians their own state I find it silly that some of my fellow liberal intellectuals attack the only secular democracy in the Middle East besides turkey.

  • Morrissey refuses to tour in Canada because of their seal-clubbing policy but tours the US despite its Iraqi-clubbing policy and Israel despite its Palestinian-clubbing policy.

Before the kneejerk reactions start, my comment has nothing to do with anti-Semitism and everything to do with human rights. It seems Morrissey is more concerned with animal rights. That, to me, is peculiar.

  • Morrissey has a reputation of being controversial. The Canada boycott, Iran, NME row and now Israel.

To play Iran-where the Human Rights record is bad and where Jewish, Christian and other minorities are forced from their homes by social, political, religious and economic oppression?
Or to play Israel- where Arab (Christian and Muslim) minorities are forced from their homes by social, political, religious and economic oppression.

    It could be argued
"It's Morrissey's choice" and is a question of artistic freedom and bringing music to the people and keep politics out of it.

But to have "Isreal" written on his arm and saying "God bless Israel" is very much a political statement.

Is it a result of disappointment over the failure of the Iran project? Or was Morrissey was angered by the anti-semitism of the Iranian government?

Or does this show a lack of political awareness?

Or is it a misguided publicity-seeking attempt?

If it goes through it will be great for the Israeli fans who want to go. Few foreign artists go there. It's considered dangerous by many and a modern-day "sun city" by others.

And yes, he will have burned many bridges on the way.

  • So people ask those of us that point out what we perceive what we think Morrissey is hypocritical over, thats quite easy to highlight.

Mozza won't play Canada because of the horrific cruelty practised there towards seals, fair enough. Yet he will play Israel where the illegal occupation of Palestine continues and Israels human rights records in the continuing illegal occupation of Palestine is clearly evident. Mozza wants to play Iran where the practise of publicly executing homosexual men and most recently homosexual teenagers is practised.

So I got to ask myself a question does Mozza care more about animal rights than human rights?.

My father is jew, I don't believe in God(s) but frankly I can't really be considered as an antisemitic person, but Israel is also a country, and this country is in the same league as Iran, China and Co. regarding Human Rights. • Is this for real? I could support it, if he was playing on top of the "peace wall"...It isn't really the fact that Morrissey is playing in Israel (he does play in America (aka Israel II) which is the same thing), but more the words used in the promo video. "God bless you"..."God bless Israel." Are you fucking kidding me? I don't fault ALL Israelis for what their country is doing to the Palestinians...But blessing THE COUNTRY that continually terrorizes these people with walls, barricades, death, violence, etc. That is bullshit! And yes, I agree with the others he have asked: "How can he play a country that promotes hatred and violence and then deny playing Canada?" I am sure the money he is making on this concert justifies him selling his soul...

1.When seals start to send missiles into your homes, towns, your local schools, kindergartens and practically hurt/ murder your loved ones.

          OR

2.When seals start sending themselves and their cubs with explosives strapped around their bodies, into buses, restaurants, and any possible public place.

        AND

    3. Then afterwards those lovely seals will celebrate their "victory" by spreading candies, cakes and other sweets (while at the same time complaining of their short supplies of food) to other seal supporters and break into dancing from midnight till dawn, showing off their bloody paws in ecstasy whilst at it.

Then you will have the right to complain!

Until then SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU SELF-RIGHTEOUS BASTARDS THAT HIDE BEHIND A SO-CALLED CARE FOR MINORITIES SUCH AS YOUR SO-CALLED PRECIOUS PALESTINIANS.YOU SICK TWISTED LITTLE FUCKS.YOU'RE DISGUSTING FOR COMPARING THE SLAUGHTERING OF INNOCENT SEALS TO A STATE WHICH DEFENDS ITSELF AGAINST A TERRORIST NATION.

  • In light of all of the pseudo intellectual, freshman level, political babbling on here, it's interesting to note that Morrissey's best chance of being allowed to play in any country in the Middle East, is offered by a supposedly brash human rights violator.

    Oh, the irony.

But yeah, those dastardly Jews win again! If only they could be less concerned about countries that refuse to acknowledge their right to exist (genocide), then the M.E. could get on with wiping them out, and Europe can finally have its ongoing anti-semitism justified.

If only a fraction of the people who often speak about the conflict actually knew what they were talking about, then this world would be a much more intelligent place.

  • To be fair to Morrissey, because of greater global awareness, it is hard for any cultural icon to go anywhere these days without fans or foes claiming that they are validating some political scandal by proxy. Just look at the (in my opinion) righteous furore over the Olympics in China.
It is controversial for him to say 'God bless Israel', considering how that will look from a Palestinian point of view, but it can hardly be deemed 'racist', as some on here think, as Israel is constituted of more than just white Jewish settlers and, what's more, he's also expressed great interest in playing Iran.

Considering Morrissey's statements putting him firmly in the camp of anti-war, anti-persecution and anti-occupation and his writing of songs such as 'I Will See You In Far Off Places', I would be confident that he is separating this trip firmly from politics; unfortunately, there will be many who do not see things that way. I think the treatment of the Palestinians is shocking, but I also think it is extremely tricky to just sweep aside the occupation and the atrocities carried out against innocent Israelis, as there are many people who have been born and brought up there and consider those lands their natural home. I condemn anyone who travels to that region NOW in order to settle, and that is a view I formed after listening to lectures in my RS class by an American Jew, who had spent time in the Palestinian refugee camps and seen houses bulldozed to make way for more settlements; sometimes people would still be inside, as they refused to leave their homes. The truth is, there are atrocities on both sides. I would hope Morrissey acknowledges that somehow, perhaps by playing 'America Is Not The World' and 'IWSYIFOP'. But, being the man I believe him to be, I'm sure he realises this.

Banning one country off his tour list for animal rights is indeed picking and choosing his causes, but then we all have to do that, otherwise there wouldn't be a country left in the world to which we could travel. I doubt he'll be able to play the Middle East after this, but I'm sure his plan is to play Iran as well, in an attempt to show that music transcends politics. I think, in his book, it doesn't transcend the politics of animal rights, as that cause doesn't recieve nearly enough attention and he's passionate to the point of irrationality on that score.

What I believe doesn't make me more comfortable about the situation mind, but if I wanted to feel comfortable about and unchallenged by the artist I follow, then I'd have picked Leona Lewis.
