It seems that these songs were certainly written and registered. There is no suggestion that they were ever recorded nor is there any indication that they are at all recent. My guess is that they were written back when Alain was working a lot with Morrissey and for whatever reason they never saw the light of day. I wouldn't get excited that these are newly written Moz/Whyte songs. It just doesn't seem to be the case.

I would vouch to say that people have connected with Alain more because in performance, he's also sung backup, so he does have a reason to connect more with the audience. Jesse's role onstage is purely as a guitarist and he rocks his stuff. If he's more serious onstage, that's alright. Wasn't Johnny pretty serious? Maybe he doesn't want to upstage Moz, too. In person, he is the sweetest guy and very mellow.

They all balance each other out, really (gotta love the Bozzer clowning around!). Hope they all stay in the game because collectively, Moz and they have made the last couple of albums truly memorable. And I have high hopes for Decca/Polydor releases!
