Update: 12/30 08:12 GMT: New article link posted by romeogirl in the comments: Morrissey gives lads £20K with additional info:

Morrissey’s manager, Merck Mercuriadis, said of the donation: “The donation is a reflection of how important the Salford Lad’s Club and its future is to Morrissey. This was meant to be a private gesture but we have agreed to allow it to be made public at the request of the club directors as they felt very strongly that it would encourage further contributions and guarantee the success of the campaign and the club’s survival.”

“I was minding my business, lifting some lead…” Etc.

It’s also sad that,in Britain: We are still at the stage where the rescue and renovation of our cultural and architectural heritage is dependent on private patronage. I am no ‘old fogey’. I love The Gherkin in The City of London and The Future Systems Harrods Building in The Bull Ring, Birmingham.

But: Nothing has really changed since Morrissey complained (mourned) the destruction of the fabric of Manchester in his earliest interviews. Around the time he was cavorting with Margox / Margi Clarke on that beach (?)Must find that one on YouTube!

Morrissey is a deservedly wealthy and celebrated Mancunian. I hope his generous donation ‘stirs the conscience’ of similar Mancunian, Brummies and Londoners who are his age: And have done very well financially, thank you very much!

‘Cunsidurably richer than yow!’ Etc, etc.

Even if they are not famous entertainers, they can pitch in. Even if you’re of modest means, throw some loose change in that direction...but, be sensible: Only if you can afford it.

Put your hands in your pockets, lads’n’lasses! Get that cheque book/debit card out. Give what you can, either to Salford Lad’s Club, or your local equivalent: On The Streets Where You Were Raised: Save What Can Still Be Saved!

It’s XXXmass time! Should auld acquaintance be forgot, etc…..

Morrissey gets a bad rap just because he keeps a tight hand on the shop-till. He's hardly Rod Stewart! It wouldn’t surprise me to find, retrospectively, posthumously (God keep him/me/you all safe for many years!):

That he has appropriately and privately given alms over the years. But hasn’t used it as a self -aggrandizing, careerist prop like so many others.

Once again, an adroit, sensitive, entirely political gesture. And the positive press coverage will make a least a start in restoring the prestige of his name and reputation following The Calumny Of The NME.
Goodness me - 9:57! Come on kids - we’ll be late for Mass!

Salford lads club isn't just about Smiths fans who go and stand outside for photo opportunities, it's about maintaining a charitable organisation at the heart of a local community. If I ever had the opportunity to donate a large amount of cash to save part of the cultural heritage of my city, then I wouldn't hesitate to do so.
That brings me round to a bit of a vent, namely, will the detractors on here just stop whining for one minute and admit that Morrissey, though not perfect, is at least possessed of sound mind and a decent soul. Just because he didn't sponsor a village in Sudan or adopt an Eastern European orphanage doesn't make him the avaricious Ebeneezer that some on here love to imagine he is. It must make it easier to avoid the fact that you're feeling disappointed in yourself, for not being a generous or kind individual, to visit this fan site and moan about everything Morrissey does: "he's looking rough / he's mean with money / he's not investing in the right causes / he's deluded about the state of the world / he's deluded about the music industry / he's disappeared up his own backside."
Well answer me this, if he were such a thoroughly unlovable person, do you think the decent people who've surrounded him for the last decade or more would continue to do so, or speak so highly of him without being prompted to do so?
Reading through some of the previous comments on this story made me smile, as what I could envisage was a bunch a bitter and small minded individuals (or maybe just one or two 'Anonymous') furiously hammering away at their keyboards to spill their vitriol at a pop star who really couldn't care less what they think. The reason they do this? Well, my theory is that they can't handle the love they feel towards Morrissey. Why else would you go on a fan site to slag someone off? I mean, most of us here must sneer our disapproval at the odd celebrity, but do we visit websites about them in order to voice this disapproval? Well, seeing as the majority of us aren't harbouring some twisted Freudian desire for these people, we've got better things to do with our time, like visiting a Morrissey fan site for the purpose of being fans of Morrissey.
I'm not saying that this site should just be the 'Morrissey fawning emporium', there's room for jokes, banter, satire and (whisper it) sarcasm. But, for god's sake, the guy's done something really worthwhile (not to mention the worthwhile things he does that aren't publicised) and still he receives abuse.

I'm about to submit a story soon about the time Morrissey rescued a baby from a burning building. I expect someone to report back telling me that the child grew up to be a serial killer so, once again, Morrissey has done a BAD thing.

The entry about the Salford Lads Club includes the information that “the club has fully embraced the legacy left behind by that photo shoot and warmly welcomes visitors to the club – a far cry from 1986 when the club lost a court case against the band. The committee objected to the picture being used without permission and without royalties being paid. The then secretary of the club, a staunch royalist, was further incensed on discovering the name of the album that the picture appeared on!”

A sentence about the Rusholme area which still regularly hosts a funfair also tickled me. “If you are lucky, the fair may be there during your visit, so you can see for yourself ‘the grease on the hair of the speedway operator’, or even take extreme action and ‘jump from the top of the parachutes’ – though, of course, this isn’t to be recommended, particularly as you haven’t completed the tour yet.” Ha!

It’s a wonderful little compilation, by the way. : )

The Salford Lads Club is not a natural disaster, but the area it is located in is very deprived and disadvantaged - and might as well be considered a national emergency with its high levels of poverty and despair.

Wasn't Moz shamed into making the donation as he is considered Manchester's leading light, unlike Chet Whyte who is not local, but gave at least £50,000 to local charities and day centres in Salford, during the making of the C4 programme - 'The Secret Millionaire'?

And notice the timing - just before Christmas. Very flattering!

His donation will obviously help - though the calculated amount does not speak volumes about the generosity of the donor. In any case shouldn't this act of charity have been conducted in private in the way "Elton secretly gave..." or "Cliff quietly contributed...!". Cynic that I am, I really don't believe that the directors of the club, requested that the donation be made public. Far from being a flattering act of generousity - it's an act of someone not unlike Ebenezer Scrooge (before his conversion) - a miserly skinflint making a public and marginally significant gesture. It's like someone who's won £2 million in the National Lottery giving £3.65p to the dustbin man, as a Christmas box.

Wily Moz, no doubt got his accountant to factor in a tax break somewhere along the line - no one ever said charity wasn't self serving. Just ask Bono and Geldof!

Unlike Sandra, Mr. Morrissey is obviously drinking the low fat, cholestral free, calorie counted skimmed milk of human kindness.

Just like his 'charitable' pals in Dublin.
