Writer/Comedian David Baddiel says The Beatles are "twee" (hooray!), "Dancing Queen" is the best pop single yet made, and Moz, Bowie and Jarvis Cocker are the greatest British lyricists!

Morrissey too, when he avoids the literal, is an astonishing word-smith – it is poetry, both witty and poignant, to describe an episode of impotence in the face of heterosexual advance with the words “And Sorrow’s Native Son/ He will not smile for anyone” as he does in Pretty Girls Make Graves, although for me his most plangent line is “And when a train goes by/ It’s such a sad sound” from the obscure track Nowhere Fast.

            Morrissey is by far, the best.
            Please check out this link to Sir Paul McCarney's new single from his new album. If this is what you call a good lyricist than the world has gone mad! I heard it on the radio the other day and nearly wet myself laughing when they announced it as a fantastic song from an equally fantastic lyricist of all time! Please.....I have missed something here or what? It is nothing but twaddle.

            McCartney's new album is actually very good.
            I'd recommend it to anyone.

            I'm enjoying it more than I did Ringleaders, which I hasten to add I liked.

            Some of the greatest songs ever have had forgettable lyrics, just as a lot of good lyrics have been wasted on lousy music.

                Not having a wang myself, it never occurred to me that the "Sorrow's native son will not smile for anyone" line in "Pretty Girls" referred to impotence. Anyone else? Maybe I'm just naive.

                his style from romantic/poetic to literal? His themes used to be so easy to relate to whether you were male,female or gay or straight. Now, unless you are a millonaire pop star, being sued by former bandmates and being harrassed by customs officers, you may not 'get' Morrissey's most recent work.

                  Baddiel goes on to explain how he once got locked out of his flat when Frank Skinner was at the football.

                  Apparently Morrissey happened to be passing and, hearing Baddiel's cries of woe, stepped forward with his big bunch of keys and within minutes they were both in the flat enjoying a nice cup of Earl Grey.
