Smiths' glory days - Manchester Evening News

THE famous photo of Manchester pop legends The Smiths outside Salford Lads Club has been recreated - to launch a DVD documentary about the all-conquering 1980s group.

The film - called Inside The Smiths - has been produced and directed by Stephen Petricco, owner of Manchester's Fab Café and TV21 bars.

The release of the rockumentary, which follows bass player Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce across England, Europe and America and features in depth interviews with the pair - could be out as soon as the end of this month.

Light-hearted

Stephen Petricco says: "The film goes inside the band but in a light-hearted way. I have been mates with Andy and Mike for years now.

"This was never a conscious effort to make a documentary - it is just something that happened."

The new Lads Club line-up features Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce plus producer Stephen Petricco, original photographer Stephen Wright, and presenter Mark Standley.

"It's both funny and sad at the same time," said Stephen.

Swallowneck - The VHS Question! (Score:0, Troll)
Swallowneck is demanding to know whether or not this documentary will be released on his beloved VHS format too... He doesn't have a problem with dvd format, but feels he gets more for his money as a video box is bigger and looks better on the shelf.

His VHS collection is quite huge, but not to my taste as there is some "erotica" of a male variety that I cannot see any worth in, but if it floats Swallowneck's boat...

Apart from Mike who is top and gave me his autograph at Logan airport last year. He sat behind me on the plane and had to put up with a boorish American middle-aged fellow bigging up his son who is in the Blue Man Group and has a house in Vegas. Whoop-de-doo. When he asked what Mike did he just replied 'I'm a musician'. Didn't say he was in the best British group since The Beatles, just showed great humility in letting the oafish American laud his bald, mute, questionably talented son for 7 hours.
And his vs Cancer gigs are worthy and great and will become a staple on the Manchester / UK gig scene for many a year to come.
    It is written.

By 'eck, this news story takes me back to the glory years of 1988 when myself (a dithering teenager) and the Mighty Swallowneck (then a more stately 22 years old) used to sit in rough Northern pubs under the daft illusion that we were also members of Salford Lads Club because we thought of it as a "Smiths Club"...

One night this horrendous female came crashing into the pub... she had fancied me for ages but I always rebuffed her advances! Anyway, she saw Swallowneck and said extremely loudly that that explained everything! I said, "Hey chick, what do you mean by that?" She then pointed at Swallowneck's limp wrists... and everyone just laughed at her!!!

My first trip to Manchester to seek out Smiths landmarks was in 1985. My friend and I had enjoyed the Mick Muddles book and set out out one rainy March day to find Morrissey . I still have wonderful b/w photographs of Whalley Range Hulme and The Caribean Club( factory Club as was) . We drew the line at stopping by Myras old house (SHAME) . I have had many trips since then the last been in 1997 when as a skinhead in nail varnish really turned heads outside the lads club. Happy days Happys Days . I am still a regular visitor to Manchester ( albeit in different circumstances) and it runs through my veins like blood.
