Hello everyone =D

Most of you know that we've been hatching a plan to get Morrissey's Life Is A Pigsty into the UK singles charts using the new download rule.

I have set up a website with all the information, the address is: www.getmozinthecharts.vze.com

On Sunday you will be able to sign up to the site's mailing list to receive updates regarding the experiment, including the specific dates of when to download the song.

I'm currently putting together a video to advertise the website on youtube, hopefully people will put the video on their MySpace's and spread the word! MORRISSEY WILL BE NUMBER 1!

  • I love all of you here at Morrissey-Solo very much
That being said this idea is really a waste of time and money
I want to vocally speak out against such frivolous consumerism
There are plenty of more worthy causes to donate your 99 cents to or .79 pound, or 1 euro or whatever
I just to respectfully express my disdain for this idea
Thank you for your time and patience
    Sincerely,
    Moho

  • It's not gonna work. If official morrissey releases like You Have Killed Me (which was released before the album was) can't make it to Number one, 'pigsty' won't. anyone who was ever gonna buy the album has it so they won't download pigsty again.

nice sentiment, it's just not going to work. save your 79p and buy Nuts magazine or something

If you don’t won’t to take part then far enough no one’s forcing anyone. But please don’t leave negative comments. You’re not helping anyone.

We’re doing this because we want to see a song we love by an artist we love get the recognition it deserves.

  • Lets prove to the music industry and general public that there really is no audience like us, and that there really isn't anybody quite like Morrissey.

Don't assume that the other Morrissey apostles you know have read this thread and are up for it. Be a true apostle and spread the word. Get their buy in.

Any ideas how can we get this discussed in our local and national media?

What can we do to ensure this is a major success and what pitfalls may we encounter, that we will need to overcome?

This is going to have to be a team effort and you are a required part of the team.

Are you going to be a spectator or are you going to help make it happen?

  • although i completely understand most morrissey fans aren't terribly wrapped up in the charts, i feel bad for what is about to happen to the british top 40. soon, every tom, dick and no talent harry will be downloading themselves into the charts. i am floored that they didn't set narrower parameters in terms of how old the song is etc. my gut tells me this new rule will be fluid and change once record companies realize their artists are not in the top of the charts. imagine the money they poor into promoting bands/singers only to have them out downloaded by a jacksons tune from the 70's!

all that being said, even though i feel it is kinda pointless being here in america and all, i see no real harm in the experiment. people are free to choose how and where to spend their money.

  • I always find it humorous that Morrissey fans think that "Life is a Pigsty" is fit for a single. It's far and away an album track, and has no radio sense to it at all.

This is further evidence that Moz fans seem to look at album charts as their personal jukebox.

More importantly, do people actually care about album charts on here? If so, then you need a new hobby. I'm aware that Morrissey cares about them because he has nothing else to do, but I find it surprising that people who normally shit on everything that has to do with the general public, would actually pay attention.

Maybe it's another case of Moz fans following one of his new emotional trends.

  • Are you sure that you know the chart rules correctly? As I am pretty sure that for a song to be elligable it still has to be released as a digital single - e.g. iTunes would have to list "Life is a Pigsty" (Single), as a seperate folder from any album it appears from. The rules used to be that this kind of digital single was only elligable if a corresponding physical release was available (or available the following week), but as far as I understand it, the change in rules now mean that even without the physical release the digital single can enter the charts, however it still has to be "released" as a digital single in the old way. Therefore still preventing just any old album track (eg. Life is a Pigsty) from being chart-elligable. Of course, there is nothing stopping record companies from releasing every track off an album as a digital single in this way, but, crucially, this has not been done with Life is a Pigsty. I may be wrong, but I think that this needs confirmation from some kind of reliable source.

  • To get this off the ground – and it’s been a few weeks now that the idea was first slapped on the table – all the preliminaries must be dealt with. What is emerging is much enthusiasm and pretty notions hand in hand with confusion and omission of make-or-break preparations. Whoever has agreed to go forward with this ‘experiment’ will naturally carry the can for not clearing the ground thoroughly before launching this fire-cracker which would then fizzle out in pathetic failure.

Information needs to be researched, and contacts made with chart authorities where necessary. All criteria for chart entry have to be met. Otherwise a fiasco will only make fools of us all. It might be wise and useful to advice Attack/Sanctuary of the proposal for several reasons. Firstly, it’s their track and their artwork, and abusing either won’t gain friends there! Conversely, they might be pleased for others to do the running on plugging their wares and if so, would be extremely well placed to provide guidance. If only out of courtesy, they should be apprised.

Notice as to whether the project is for the UK only or for all countries to have a go in the same week should be given. There are many more viewers than posters here and on other sites so the efforts from some locations might result in a pleasant surprise.

A failure to launch won’t mean the end of the world. Hopefully it won’t be too long before Morrissey has more single material ready, and I think his camp at least will have ticked all the boxes before lift-off…

  • You need around a couple of thousand sales to break into the top 40 on an average week, I do believe.

Whilst Moz-Solo certainly has 1000s of visitors, only a vanishing subset of these will stump up the cash.

In short, unless a national DJ or magazine gets involved, then certainly the single won't go top 40.

  • The Official Charts Company oversees the count and validity of charting songs. Their website hosts the rules, posted January 2007, for eligible entries – http://www.theofficialcharts.com/docs/NEW_Single_C hart_Rules_2007.pdf

Since Ringleader… has already been officially launched, I have been assured that each track would have already been registered with Catco, as a song also has to be for chart consideration. So, relying on Sanctuary following industry standards, this would have been done for Pigsty, making it eligible to count towards the charts as it stands; no additional registration required.

The value of letting the record company know the plan, was raised a couple of times by my source. It was also pointed out that any rigging, illegal sales, bulk buying etc could lead to the track being pulled, for which humiliation Attack might attack! In sum, there does not seem to be an impediment to rallying all fans on a particular week to collectively and lovingly hoist their Mozzer into the charts without him so much as lifting a finger! The only remaining challenge is to access all areas where would-be downloaders snort, and to broadcast the call to arms as far and wide – and as clearly - as possible for respectable numbers to get involved.

Noone was more surprised than Morrissey himself when he notched up the 2nd position in the Icon race, in the face of tirades of rancour against him from all sides. But Morrissey’s sleepers are everywhere, outnumbering opponants; often quiet but ready to strike en masse at the right moment. Wonders never cease, people; just do your bit and see what happens. : )

  • It doesn't look like Moz will be played on the BBC top 40 countdown. According to Wikipedia, this company compiles the UK top 40, and they appear to be reporting that Moz is NOT in the top 40 downloads or singles for last week.

    www.theofficialcharts.com/top40_downloads.php

Moz also isn't in last week's top 75 singles here:

    http://uk.launch.yahoo.com/c/uk/single_ charts.html

I didn't see a top 75 or 200 downloads list yet on any sites... not that the public generally watches those.
