  • Hope care is taken over the pacakaging and Viva restored to its original front cover.

But how to "remaster" Vauxhall? It's character is partly based on its slightly subdued, muffled production. We shall see....

  • I expect the Viva Hate issue will just contain the bonus tracks that the current in-print version has. Sadly.

However, a remaster of these albums will be good to hear, if done as well as The Very Best Of The Smiths (or better).

  • They can remaster the albums in 5.1 just like the Talking Heads reissues. Or just the like the Cure reissues, Double cds, 1st cd -regular album, 2nd cd, outtakes and bsides. I would like to have them in 5.1

    Please be quality!

  • Let's see, my 'Kill Uncle' cd skips so bad that I can't play it and I let a friend borrow 'Your Arsenal' in 1995 and he never gave it back (a-hole!). So, I'll get those two for sure. As for the other two, it all depends on the price of gas then (LOL). I do miss those good old Morrissey songs from the late 80's and early 90's. I still say that was his best work. By the way, were is 'Bona Drag' in this list? Not a studio album but a great collection of songs.

  • Since two-channel stereo is becoming less and less nowadays, it seems that 5.1 surround sound would be the best way to go.

DVD-Audio would be nice since it has much higher quality than that of a CD. Besides, I have a couple of R.E.M.'s Warner reissues and the sound is superb. Music videos and live recordings can also be watched on this format. I guess SA-CD would be nice too, but I don't know much about that.

I am hoping that we get the complete b-sides, singles between albums, and rare tracks (ex. 'November the 2nd' and 'Stay As You Are') and that they are properly remastered as well.

I will also be picking up the Smiths box-set, whenever Warners releases that.

  • would *love* to have these on vinyl, the Simply Vinyl "...Arsenal" is nice to have but the other original releases are much harder to come by. I feel that the larger format does justice to the artwork in a way that CD never has. What does everybody else think?

  • mindless "paint a vulgar picture" regurgitations aside, this is very good news. the sound quality of vauxhall and arsenal in particular i've always found disappointing. arsenal sounds a bit muddy (except the acoustic songs) and vauxhall is one of the quietest albums i own, in terms of overall levels. even if i turn up the volume all the way on my car stereo it's not as loud as i need it to be. not even close. same with arsenal, really. that's always bothered me.
extra track and a tacky badge...gimme a break. improvement is improvement. anyone who's heard the bob dylan, joe jackson, led zeppelin, elvis costello, depeche mode, or johnny cash remasters (among many others) would doubtless agree. CD's issued even as recently as the mid '90's (but definitely less so after that) in many cases just aren't up to snuff.

  • This isn't a case of Paint a Vulgar Picture- remastering actually restores recordings to their intended glory. There is a noticeable difference- the people who buy the remasters will hear what I mean. The ones who don't won't!

Anyone who sees this as a cash-in really doesn't know what they're talking about. Remastering is a GREAT idea!

  • What exactly do they do when they re-master an album? I've got The Very Best of The Smiths, but I can't say I've ever noticed a difference between the originals and the re-mastered songs on the Best Of. I'll have to give it another listen later on. Also, Southpaw Grammar is far superior to Viva Hate. Discuss.

  • How would this have anything to do with Moz seeing as though all those albums are owned by other record companies EMI, aren't they? I mean it's not like we listen to those albums and think "Well they're good but what they could really use is a remastering" :)

  • From true to you:

I have heard that the CDs Viva Hate, Kill Uncle, Your Arsenal and Vauxhall and I are to be re-presented/re-mastered/re-whatevered. I have no involvement with this project, and whatever I learn about it is via the delightful gossip chain. I am sorry to hear that Bona Drag is not included because it is such a complete body of work and one of which I am most proud. However, if The Very Best of the Smiths is anything to go by I think we are all justified in expecting the worst. Having said that, I am not even sure whether it's EMI or Warners-Reprise who are doing the re-issues, but neither company are particularly bright when it comes to such things - as they consistently prove. For example, when Warners in London sent me the final proof of the Very Best of the Smiths I wearily pointed out to them that there were 18 typo errors on their artwork and that, in any case, they shouldn't release the CD in such an awful sleeve. They completely ignored me, of course, but they corrected the 18 errors. Typical
