One song before I go - Pop Candy, by Whitney Matheson

While I was exploring downtown Manchester this morning, my iPod shuffled to a track I don't hear often enough: Magazine's A Song From Under the Floorboards, which was a minor hit in 1980. I resolved to search for an MP3 when I got back so those of you who've never heard it could treat yourselves.

While I didn't find the original (for free, anyway), I did discover Morrissey covered the tune on his last tour. Here's where you can hear it, though be patient while it loads. For me, the best part is shouting "I am an insect!" during the chorus.

I really think Moz's cover was better than every original song on ROTT. I never heard Magazine's original version so I got really excited that Moz finally recorded a song that I enjoyed. Boy was I surprised to hear that it wasn't even his.
sad, but grateful.

A Song From Under the Floorboards can be found on the classic album "The Correct Use of Soap", for those that are interested in exploring Magazine further. The lyrics of ASFUTF strike me as being an apt choice for a Morrissey cover, particularly "the brightest jewel inside of me glows with pleasure at my own stupidity". Just seems like the type of self-putdown Moz would enjoy!

Took all the life and spirit out of the song.

If you like the cover but haven't heard the original, run out and buy some Magazine albums. Brilliant band.

Morrissey's covers of The New York Dolls "Trash" and "Human Being" are his best! The New York Dolls were the greatest rock band ever! Long live David, Johnny, Sylvain, Arthur, and Jerry.

I believe so far that this is his best work to date. The song should have been placed on the Ringleader album. So far I am very happy with the B-sides. If you don't like me, don't look me seemed just a wee bit week, but I love the feeling of the song.

Floorboards is excellent and I just recently heard the original by magazine. I like both versions but Morrissey's has more feeling and I can relate more when he sings it.

I love how he changed the lyrics
      from
"my irritability keeps me alive and kicking
I know the meaning of life, it doesn't help me a bit
I know beauty and I know a good thing when I see it"
      to
"I don't know what keeps me alive and kicking
I know the meaning of life, it doesn't help me a bit
I know beauty and I know a good thing when I speak it"

      and
"I have to confess I'm proud as hell of that fact
I know the highest and the best
I accord them all due respect"
      to
"I have known the highest and I've known the best
I accord death all its due respect"

He's like Frank Sinatra, making the song his own.

I would rather have Morrissey write some new material though, but there are still more B-sides to come and I'll buy everyone.
