Will any of the eight albums that finished above "The Queen Is Dead" in the 1986 NME journalists' poll be getting a similar honour?
Janet Jackson's was one, if I remember correctly.

20 years of the "Queen Is Dead"? Hold on, that means I have been out of high school for about 20 years- shite! I will listen to the CD this week at work and at home. Great songs!

to mark TQID as the best smiths album. i know it's been debated ad nauseam but 'the smiths' and 'meat is murder' are (to me) easily the equal of TQID, and are both dazzling self-contained albums. while the smiths were wearing out by 'strangeways' (although 'stop me...' raised the Palladium roof last week) their body of work is as magical and unfathomable as ever. i feel in these bite-size all-you-need-to-know times, to iconise The Queen Is Dead is to (a) freeze it as an historical artefact (b) relegate the other records (and morrissey's solo work) to second-rate status.

anyway i'm so suspicious of NME these days. it's a brand logo for corporations to attach to their release/radio station/festival. it's hardly an independent critical voice - its editorial space is a 10th of what it was when TQID came out, and back then it had several competitors.

i find the admittance of the smiths and in particularly the queen is dead into the "classic rock" pantheon distasteful.
this vile pious retrocentric and - dare i say it - long haired outlook now dominates music journalism as well as "serious" consumption.
it is difficult for many to stomach but the smiths were a pop band..possibly the last one to carry such a huge intellectual and sub-cultural clout..but a pop group none the less.their use of the past was subtle, often polical and very poigniant. ..and they were despised by most pious rock fans at the time,so every time some longhair bigs up the queen is dead it is as mouthpiece of the retro-cognisenti...and i usually tell them meat is murder and strangeways are better.
