Manchester music "mogul" Tony Wilson is in a rage according to Uncut magazine, responding to Morrissey's remark that Joy Division were "incredibly boring", Wilson shrieks, "It speaks volumes that they've made a movie about me and they're making one about Ian Curtis and nobody is making one about the miserable **** from Altrincham."

Hey Tony, enjoy your memories, try not to be so bitter!

  • Tony Wilson is a very creepy, slimy character. A perfect example of a bitter has-been record label boss ruined by cocaine.

  • Hey Tony, I love Joy Division too, but please lay off the "they made a movie" line as a show of greatness. "They" also made movies about Selena and Vanilla Ice. Calm down.

  • What was the film called? 24 hour party people? It was utter shit. I'm sure a film about Morrissey would be much more interesting - if Morrissey agreed one to be done that is.
A Record Label "Mogul" sounds so vulgar.

  • JD were a great band but they really haven't got much to do with Tony Wilson, have they? Tony Wilson tries to claim his fame from all things Manchester these days.

  • I saw those guys play in some toilet in Preston about seven hundred years ago and they were utter shit. The sound was lousy, Curtis was constantly off-key, and the bass wanted be a guitar and the guitar wanted to be somewhere else. Awful. Forget it, kids.

  • The main difference there is that Morrissey criticised the music, wheras that Joy Division fella blew his own trumpet and then reverted to name calling, like a pathetic pre-pubescant 11 year old child getting his first stiffy.

Tony Wilson has always been and will always be a second rate local journalist with a chip on both shoulders trying to cadge a lift on any passing bandwagon.
It started with the Pistols, he tried to claim credit for "breaking" them up north, when all he did was introduce them on a badly presented news show.
And whats wrong with Altrincham! even if Moz was from there.

  • This is the Oxbridge graduate who recently sneered at (secondary modern educated) Morrissey on his radio show for mispronouncing the word "chasm" when he was younger. The man is a snob.

Working class Mancunians may admire this man all they like but they should be aware that their regard is not reciprocated.

The reason he doesn't like Morrissey is because Morrissey never gave him the respect he thinks he is due. Morrissey should know his place as far as Tony Wilson is concerned.

  • I am ANGRY about this. I read it a while ago as well (not in UNCUT) but I would like to say that if Martin had been here, then we would have given Wilson yet another kicking and no, not in the courtroom.

Martin, Alan and Rob were the true stars of factory. How great it is therefore that Morrissey is currently playing a song on this tour by the true genius Martin Hannett.

Wilson is a joke. A man who gives another man 20 per cent of nothing (which is what factory were worth) is a joke. And a fool. And only a fool would want to see himself in that movie.

  • Tony, grow up a bit, will you?

Morrissey doesn't find Joy Division interesting. You are more presumptuous than I even thought possible if you're trying to take credit for them.

No, Morrissey didn't have a movie made about him - oh wait, but he DID have a one hour special made about him, which was subsequently broadcast all over the UK. Hmm.

Surely more important things exist to get all up in arms about.

This is from the man who inflicted the Happy Mondays on the world!

I remember the posters for 24 Hour Party People when it first came out- the one depicting Tony had the word TWAT emblazoned on it. Tony, you must be so proud! They made a film about you and depicted you as a cunt- they were right!

Also, anyone who went to see the Smiths South Bank Show at the NFT last December knows how excruciating your presenting skills are. We had to endure 'highlights' from So It Goes beforehand. Enough to turn anyone off music for life...

  • Ha, ha, I guess the only thing that REALLY bothers good ol' To' is, that Steven Patrick is even more pretentious and self-centered than he is already! That whole JD/NO/Factory vs. Mozzer feud is nevertheless always great fun to read, though, as I worship both camps (nearly) equally, and I think Wilson as well as Morrissey are very witty in their own (sick) ways...

  • "Tony Wilson is a fat pig trapped in a man's body"

When asked if he was being a little unkind, Moz corrected himself,

"Sorry, I meant to say he was a fat man trapped in a pig's body".

Therefore proving Moz has more wit in his little finger than Tony Wilson has in his whole fat pigman body.

  • Get back in the house Wilson; you're the Noel Edmonds of music.
24 Hour Party People is a good film, but does Tony think that being portrayed by Steve Coogan as a ghastly caricature is something of which to be proud?
And, as people have said, films / biopics are usually about the forgotten and the dead. Wilson and Curtis certainly moved things along on a personal level, for business and the Manchester music scene respectively, but Factory and New Order are the legends (and personally I don't think the latter deserves that accolade outside of the 80's).
As for Joy Division, they were necessary, but in the same way The Quarry Men were necessary to The Beatles. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is an absolute classic and will always have a place in my top 10, but that's really a God given highlight in the world of a very sick man and his 'out of depth' friends. How does it feel to be known for exploiting the mentally ill, Wilson?
**** is absolutely right, and it doesn't apply to Morrissey.

  • Tony Wilson got molested by a man from Croydon when he was 19.
Apart from the cruel torment of having his genitals toyed with, what made it especially heartbreaking for Mr. Wilson was that the Croydon man laughed at him for having no pubes.

  • People have been calling Moz and his music miserable for 25 years and I haven't seen or heard Morrissey flying into a rage at them and calling them c*nts. As everybody knows what Joy Division and Ian Curtis' songwriting was about. They were supposed to sound miserable that was the whole point as Ian Curtis was feeling that way when he wrote his songs! • Intemperate language from Mr Wilson but you might be the same if you'd had "your" best band criticised. Wilson ain't that bad really.

The one really inexcusable part of Tony's little diatribe is the hideous smear of saying Moz is "from Altrincham"!! Moz lived in the environs of the infamously bourgeois suburb of Greater Manchester for a couple of years in the later part of his Smiths fame and the early part of his solo career. It would be more accurate to call him "the cunt from Los Angeles" or even "the cunt from Rome."

Wilson is using the underhand method of trying to smear our hero as middle-class. Bad boy Tony! Ian Curtis was from fucking MACCLESFIELD (even posher than Alty, and even further from Manchester!!)
