The official music chart of Australia, the ARIA chart, reports that Ringleader of the Tormentors has entered at number 55.

Below is a short paragraph that accompanied the news. It features chart placings for Morrissey's previous albums...

Steve Patrick Morrissey, better known as just Morrissey, was once the lead singer of British rock band The Smiths. The band broke up in 1987, with Morrissey launching his solo effort shortly after. Not one to be shy, he has addressed issues of child murder, prostitution, drug use, racism and homosexuality in his music. In recent years Morrissey has still charted in the Top 100, with You Are The Quarry coming in at #64 (May '04), Maladjusted at #62 (Aug. '97) and Southpaw Grammar at #74 (Sep. '95). Ringleader Of The Tormentors is the #1 album in Morrissey 's native U.K. this week.

I was at the gig last night and was wondering how ROTT would do in Aus .. here's my answer .. pretty poorly :( No wonder he doesn't visit us when he's getting the reception he does over here.

Just remember we only have about 20, 000,000 people in this country and the bulk of them are triple J listeners, basically Powderfinger and crappy bands like that. His disappearing act 11 years ago didn't exactly help his cause down under but he still has a lot of fans here considering the demographic we have and small population. By the way "You have killed me" is getting quite a lot of airplay in Australia at the moment and a lot of non Moz fans are taking a shine to it.

Australian ROTT CDs are rip-offs (Score:0)
I was in HMV Pitt St, one of the major stores in Sydney, and they were ONLY selling the deluxe edition of ROTT, and it was $37!!

How on earth is that going to attract anyone other devoted Moz fans, when almost everything else in the Top 40 is going for $20-25?

As I reported earlier on the message boards, the Sanity shop in Hobart I went to didn't have it at all, and had no intention of getting it. Their computer crashed after about ten minutes of searching. The bloke couldn't even spell Morrissey's name and hadn't heard of the album.

I'll try again next week at the bigger Virgin shop in town on my monthly outing, and if they don't have it, one of the specialist shops next month.

Naively I hoped that it would be glaring out at me from the shelves along with the new Madonna and Prince, but it seems Morrissey's even harder to get now than he was twenty years ago when we had to borrow the records from older friends.

I don't see how Morrissey could reasonably have anything against Australia on account of album sales if the jolly things aren't even available to buy in the first place. (And I'm certainly not going to pay nearly twice the normal price for a deluxe edition. It's music I'm interested in, not video clips, etc.)

Surely he can be very shy? When interviewed on TV he always looks a bit uncomfortable and often looks off camera to his band as if for reassurance. Having said that, he can be outspoken about issues he belives strongly in, so...

I suppose that mixture of shyness and outspoken-ness is part of why I love him :)
