When Quarry peaked at #2 ("will anyone named Keane please leave the building"), I felt so bad because it deserved to go to #1; everywhere one looked in Manchester there was Quarry. But the comeback was brilliant, Moz toured the world, was on the cover of many magazines, made more radio/tv/media appearances than we would have ever imagined for someone so shy / fey, Quarry went platinum in the UK, and all 4 Quarry singles were top 10 UK hits. Still, a little voice inside some of us felt Moz got jipped. Today, that voice is silenced. That a 46 year old singer who has already been at the top of his game at several points throughout his career, has already had many peaks and pinnacles, could pull this off in the midst of all the teeny bop and bubble pop…well it is mind blowing. I wonder: did David Bowie have any number 1 albums in his 40s? Did Elvis? Congratulations Morrissey.

Not that ROTT is a terrible album by any stretch of the imagination, but I have this working theory about how things hit their stride. For example, television series seem to hit it in their 3rd season. You watch early episodes of CSI or Seinfeld and they are crap, but they are working their way up to something.

The Queen is Dead is the 3rd studio album, we can't deny where that one went.

Your Arsenal is the 3rd solo album. I know that Viva Hate wasn't a shabby album by any stretch, but it was a leftover from the Smith's for all intents and purposes, so maybe Kill Uncle is the true first solo album where he is finding his footing with totally new people and Vauxhall is the 3rd one, and that one is even better than YA.

Think of YATQ clearing the slate and reacquanting everyone with the studio and ROTT breaking in some new players.

So, as strange as this might sound, it's going to be that next album that is going to zing.

Ringleader is the first number one ever on Attack, which started life as a reggae label in 1972, and is now a Sanctuary imprint.

Morrissey first topped the chart with The Smiths' Meat Is Murder in February 1985, and extends his span to more than 21 years with his fourth number one in all, and his second solo number one, Ringleader Of The Tormentors. The only artists with longer spans of number ones are Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Diana Ross, Pink Floyd, Abba and Barbra Streisand.

Ringleader sold over 10,000 less than Quarry in week one just like You Have Killed Me sold nearly 10,000 less than Irish Blood. ROTT got to number one because there weren't any other big sellers out last week.

If anything Moz has lost fans this time round as there is no longer the huge hype that spurred the patchy comeback album to platinum status.

Moz desperately needs a radio hit if ROTT is to be anything more than the usual hollow fans-only purchase before it slips into obscurity. It was the airplay (and sheer musical and poetic brilliance) of First of the Gang which gave Quarry its chart longevity (it was flying out of the charts until radio picked up on FOTG) but is there anything on ROTT which can do the same? Youngest is a little better than You Have Killed Me but it's nowhere near as good as First of the Gang, in my humble.

DGMW, it's still a fine achievement to get to number 1. I'm happy for Moz but it doesan't mean his fanbase has suddenly grown beyond all recognition/expectation.

In 2004, Keane wiped him off the map and rightfully so, Hopes and Fears was a much stronger album. Moz must be resting easy knowing that Keane's next LP is coming out in June.

(Excusing the unfortunately named Journey South and a few other notable exceptions). Considering there was almost no airplay for this record it is a great achievement and a testament to Morrissey the man and Morrissey the musician. It is more than pleasing that Morrissey has a nice slice of history in being the first number one of the integrated album chart. A move that I fear will see the album chart go the way of the singles chart eventually. Until then, viva Morrissey
