After a Fashion: Saturday, gossip - The Austin Chronicle

Excerpt:

BITCHEEEEE Backstage at the Morrissey/Goldfrapp show, the Morrissey camp was so difficult to work with that Ray Davies didn't even make it through sound check. He packed up his toys and went home, literally. I guess Davies thought that Morrissey should have had more respect for his elders.

Ray Davies was the invited special guest for Morrissey's show at Austin Music Hall during sxsw. One Austin paper reported that Davies did not play because Morrissey's entourage was being too difficult/prohibitive backstage.

As for what really happened- Well word has it that Davies insisted the only way he would perform was if the entire stage was cleared of other equipment. This would have been prohibitive for the other acts playing after him including Goldfrapp who had elaborate setups. When Davies was told this was not possible, he refused to play.

Who's difficult?....

how did that work? (Score:1)
i can see a gang of roadies leaning on the crates, smoking their cigarettes, and maliciously unplugging his guitar 5 notes into every song and laughing when he has to stop and walk back over and plug it in.

"hey, cut that out!"
"what are you going to do about it, old man?"
"well, I, uh....."
"that's what we thought."

This is sad, whichever way it went. While Morrissey is a great lyricist, Ray is an untouchable songwriter. In the history of rock music, the list should be #1 The Beatles, #2 The Kinks.

and I'm sure she'd have told Morrissey that Ray's not like everybody else:

I won't take all that they hand me down,
And make out a smile, though I wear a frown,
And I won't take it all lying down,
'Cause once I get started I go to town.

'Cause I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

And I don't want to ball about like everybody else,
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else,
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else,
'Cause I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

But darling, you know that I love you true,
Do anything that you want me to,
Confess all my sins like you want me to,
There's one thing that I will say to you,
I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else
And I don't want to ball about like everybody else,
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else,
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else,
'Cause I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

Like everybody else,
Like everybody else,
Like everybody else,
Like everybody else.

If you all want me to settle down,
Slow up and stop all my running 'round,
Do everything like you want me to,
There's one thing that I will say to you,
I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.
And I don't want to ball about like everybody else,
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else,
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else,
'Cause I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

Like everybody else (like everybody else),
Like everybody else (like everybody else),
Like everybody else (like everybody else),
Like everybody else.

Ray's always been high on my list as 1 of the top lyricists in the business. The Kinks rule OK!

Was Ray going to perform solo or with a band? (Score:1)
If he was going to perform a solo acoustic set, he'd be quite a prima donna to insist that the stage be cleared. I have my doubts about the veracity of the story that he wanted to have the stage cleared. I don't place my trust in either report, actually.

Much as I love Ray Davies (the Kinks were my first love...) that he acted like a prima donna is hardly news. Ray's always felt under appreciated, always felt he was better than his contemparies. He compensates by being an ass.

In truth, while the late 60's - early 70's albums and even some of the 80's stuff are great, they are less consistent than the Beatles, Who, and Stones. But then again, Davies really was more of a one man gang than those bands. I'm sure thinking of his band, he would agree with Morrissey that they are "lawn mower parts". Did anyone see how offhandedly he treated them at the British Hall of Fame awards?

Well Ray Davies, you can add your name to the endless list of people who Morrissey has pissed off over the years.

However, it's always the other person's fault isn't it ? Saint Morrissey is such an affable bloke.
