ROTT promo CD copy protected

Got a promo copy of ROTT in the post this morning. I would tell you about it but I can't – it's copy protected. On my Mac, which I use to review CDs at work, it won't even show up on the desktop; it just makes the drive sound very sick. Bummer! i now have to dig through a junk cupboard of electrical items to find an old-fashioned CD player! What gives? Is piracy/file-sharing something Morissey cares particularly about, or is it record company paranoia? If it weren't for the fact I want to hear the album it would already be in the bin.

The terrible ignomy of the spinning disc (Score:0)
Sunny my heart goes out to you. The terrible ignomy of having to look for a cd player. That must be such a drag, or is that the sound of your knuckles brushing off the floor as you lope around your office? Perhaps you could save us all a lot of trouble and throw yourself in the bin the next time you receive a protected disc.

You're joking.

Not everyone who plays CDs on their computer is a bastard music pirate you know. Members of a file-sharing community who share good music tend to go out and buy the records they like.

How did this get on the main page anyway? (Score:1)
This is nonsense. What happened to the main page being for newsworthy information. The promo cd (cardsleeve I assume as mine is) has been discussed on the main page and was relatively newsworthy until the album leaked or was shared on the main board on Saturday Night/Sunday Morning..HA HA. Who cares how you listen to it. Quarry was copy protected in its' cardsleeve promo format too. In four weeks the protected cd won't be worth the paper sleeve it's in, and will be less useful than the standard cd. In fact it might already be useless as everyone has the album in one form or another now.

My promo copy is also copy protected but I had no trouble ripping it for my iPod. Heard the whole album 4 times now, it's growing on me...

To play a Copy Controlled CD, you need to make sure iTunes doesn't automatically launch upon CD insertion (that's the 'ignore' option).

This can be done via the CDs & DVDs System Preferences panel.

Copy Control is still a flakey technology, but is specifically designed to prevent digital encodement of music, rather than straight 'burning' of it.

You will need to duplicate a Copy Controlled CD with Toast or Disc copy if you want to import the music via iTunes. A pain, yes but the outsmart factor makes it all worthwhile.

Maybe the copyright controls have something to do with protecting one's product before it's made available for wide release.

It is shocking to me how many people in 2006 feel this sense of absolute entitlement. "I'm me, therefore I deserve everything I want--and now! With no consequence, no price, and no blood shed by me...just by you...now gimmee, gimmee, gimmee."

And save the bad-mouthing of the different single release formats...he's done it for years, we've bought them all willingly, and we will do it again. It's not a problem for a real fan who views their Morrissey collection as a hobby as well as entertainment.

Crybabies, "I-people", and cheapskates...go be a fan of Rob Thomas or something...

By the way, track 18 on The Wedding Present's disc, "George Best Plus" is pure pop joy...if you don't have it, go and get it today and thank me later...(there are also about 10 other tracks that are a close second to the one I recommended)...
