I Come To Your Emo-tional Rescue by Kate Sullivan - LA Weekly, Jan. 18, 2006

Excerpt:

To complicate things, there’s also this old idea that proper emo should have a certain hollering whininess to it, the better to irritate, and express true earnestness.

“Oh, like Incubus? Or is it more like the Mars Volta? — no, Morrissey! The Smiths!”

I always thought the proper look was the standard issue Rivers Cuomo uniform. If I showed up anywhere looking like that or listening to "emo" music when I was growing up, I'd have been stoned... and probably rightly so.

The Smiths and Morrissey are NOT emo, thank you!

Funny article, I always thought Emo was the Washington HC scene back in the early Haties ie. Rites of Spring, Ignition, Embrace...All the punks were listening to R.E.M and then decided to do some melodic songs...but of course the record labels/fashion companys/hairdressers want to cash in with the young kids (where the dad's money is), even back in '84 it was a tag that the hardcore kids always despised but somehow Emo exploded in the early 2000's and NME (who at the time didn't have any new Strokes-like band to be the new flavour of the week) did an even more article about it and how to dress up like an Emo Kid and naming Fugazi (post-hardcore), Descendents and Husker Du (punk) as the roots of Emo....gotta love it.

Why must people label all those who listen to My Chemical Sweatpants as emo? It's the buzz word of the decade. Tight jeans = emo. Ridiculous haircut = emo. Anything whiny = emo.

Emo is an offshoot of hardcore punk which began rougly sometimes in the 1980's. Emo does not stand for 'emotive' or 'emotional'. It's emotional HARDCORE. ie. hardcore punk with more introspective and emotional lyrics than the typical issues covered in your usual punk lyrics. Despite what MTV says, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Weezer etc. are not emo. At all. Bands who are emo are Rites of Spring, Saetia, Transistor Transistor, Lee Marvin Computer Arm, and so forth.

How can anyone gifted with a few braincells define EMO as a genre ? If I got the article well, EMO stands for Emotional... What kind of music in the world isn't based on emotions, whether they're aggressive, sad or whatever ? That's just non-sense. Quit writing.
