Wilde is on my side writes:
On Radio 4 this Thursday (13th October) at 11pm Andrew McGibbon is going to be talking about Morrissey and his time drumming with him.

I checked it up on the R4 site, and it says:

"In this fast-moving half-hour, comedian and writer Andrew McGibbon - a superb live and session drummer who has worked with everyone from Peter Gabriel to Bucks Fizz - recalls his drumming sojourn with Morrissey, arguably one of the wittiest and most profound rock poets of his generation.

With contributions from Suggs, The Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke, long-suffering producers Clive Langer (Elvis Costello, Dexy's Midnight Runners), Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths) and Danton Supple (Coldplay), as well as jaundiced journalists David Quantick and Mark Kermode."

Could be interesting!

  • Mark Kermode is great. Love the quiff. AND he thinks The Exorcist is the best British film ever. Brilliant!!

Is this thing just a group of people sitting around talking about Moz???

Heard Andrew (Paresi) McGibbons talking yesterday morning (11/10 I think) about his time with Moz and this show on the Phil Jupitus Show BBC radio 6. Andrew was very gracious about his time with Moz. He also told of how he changed his name after a girlfriend's suggestion to Paresi another word for an embolism, I think he said. Must have changed it back to a more sensible moniker.....? He rabbited on about other stuff too, it's probably online via the BBC radio website.

  • A radio show featuring long-suffering record producers and jaundiced journalists? Oh, dear. This sounds a little like a remote broadcast via Hell's Pass hospital.

Well, I will try to tune into this.

Listen again to Tuesday's show and the interview is in the last half hour.

  • Listening to it now, slightly interesting, very mildly amusing I suppose

"Everyday is Like Sunday is Morrissey's attempt to make a New Order record" says David Quantick....well, at least that's an..opinion....

Ahh....."Disappointed"....lovely!! If for nowt else "Paresi" should be praised for that.

I'll save you any more of my devastating insight.

  • In the interview on Radio 6 earlier this week Paresi was effusive in his praise for Morrissey and how much everyone who worked for him liked him.

Yet the programme seemed to be very lukewarm about him and even subtly slagging him off.

I suppose the truth must lie somewhere between the two.

In all, I found it a bit dull, probably because it concentrated less on Morrissey and more on Paresi (about whom I have no interest at all).

  • There was a bit more bang for our buck there, a fair assortment of Morrissey song snippets and short tales, though in places almost word for word from Andrew's Q special interview last year. I especially giggled at the description of the meals where nobody would start until Morrissey did. Daunting company indeed as Jonathon Ross reflected! But what a character to elicit such impulsive reverence! It's a rarity. My ex-neighbour, pal of the Sack boys, described their meals with the Moz in the Mermaid restaurant similarly. Everything's dropped in all respects for the axis of the universe Morrissey - because he's worth it!

It's entertaining, although about as funny as an orphanage on fire.

Andy Rourke is interviewed. Him and Mike Joyce were around after Viva Hate far more than I knew.

There are come interesting stories about recording the Bona Drag sessions at Hook End. Sitting down to dinner every night was apparently like 'the last supper' with no-body starting their food until Morrissey did and no-one starting on the wine until Moz had tasted it.

Also, Kill Uncle is spoken of in glowing terms. As it should be.

    Go listen!

  • The show was pretty good. Paresi seems like a nice guy. Also interesting was the interview he did on the radio earlier in the week. It seems like most people who have worked with Moz leave with a great respect and even awe for the man.

  • Really liked Suggs' bits. He thought Sing Your Life might have been about him! He described the chorus bit when they were all singing along somewhat drunkenly for the backing vocals!
Andrew Paresi was the voice behind wacky Radio 1 traffic news spoof 'Major Holdups'. What a frightfully posh (and rather articulate) fellow he is. Top notch!

  • I've always know him as "Paresi"? What is this McGibbon? Someone please explain. And since we're on the subject of Morrissey's drummers my opinion on best ever is:

    1. Mike Joyce of course by far.
    2. Spencer a not so distant (I suppose) second
    3. Everyone else after those two.
    4. Dean Butterbean....what a waste of time. I could play better and I've never played drums in my life.

  • Didn't know that it would be available online on the website, so set the mobile phone recorder to tape the programme from the radio on the bedside cabinet.

Unfortunately, after 15 minutes of playback, 2 very loud sets of snoring can be heard.

  • This is available on the Radio 2 website for 7 days after transmission. Very funny account of the Viva Hate and Kill Uncle sessions. The bit about the blind stick was hilarious. I love the way Moz is described like some distant, illustrious figure, like Bette Davis or something. Any Moz fan must listen to this tongue in cheek documentary.
