Today is the 50th anniversary of James Dean's death. Very 'Suedehead'. I already listened to it today as a memorial. He would have been 74!

Fantastic article on James Dean, Morrissey mentioned:

Jimmy Dean, rock on - theage.com.au

Was Dean the first teenager, or the first pop star, as Barney Hoskyns suggests. Morrissey of the The Smiths has written a book about him: Bob Dylan made a pilgrimage to Fairmount, Indiana, where Dean grew up. His name has been invoked, in song, by everyone from Madonna to Michelle Shocked, David Essex to the Eagles, Don McLean to Daniel Bedingfield...The band Green Day have acknowledged him as an inspiration for their song Boulevard of Broken Dreams...

  • Besides the video, what does Suedehead have to do with James Dean?

I remember watching an old Morrissey Interview on his fascination with James Dean. He said something like "I was never a big fan of his movies, as much as I was with the person." Or something along those lines. When I was talking to him in Boston a few years back, I gave him a set of really nice James Dean cards from the Dean Library and he really liked them. We both had some good things to say about the James Dean's very cool image. The one that will always be borrowed by other actors, but never replaced! I love to watch the few movies that he made while he was alive. There is some really good stuff out there on DVD and Video that shows just how much Jamed Dean did long before his three major pictures that you can find if you visit some video and music stores. Before I left Morrissey, I told him that "I had a first pressing of 'James Dean Is Not Dead'. {the book that he wrote about his hero} He only smiled and said "well, that was quite some time ago". It wasn't the greatest effort on Morrissey's part, but at least he put his effort into writing about someone who he felt deserved to be written about! No matter what happens, there will never be another one like JD. Not now, not ever. The man is gone, but his legacy will live on forever!

    • I really liked the way you seam your experiences, Morrissey's comments and James Dean's references together! I watched "Rebel Without a Cause" this past summer, and I really believe, after wathing so many films from the period this one was made, that this film is one of the only ones that actually dares to put its finger on the wound of some sensitive issues that never were brought up, worked out nor unfolded before the eyes of Hollywood, which were maybe very puritanic back then, and which wanted to keep conforming to basic social values. Although the fifties, were the times family and social values began to be, more than the 40's openly questioned in films, "Rebel Without a Cause" focused on a younger generation whose perspective on the "older and wiser" was never a focus to be counted for, unlike it happened with this film and others, like The 400 Blows. I think that's why James Dean was so important; he was the embodiment of this youth that was malajusted yet the one who saw a stagnant life with humanist unconformism, and a strange sense of justice. Yes, they are lost and hysterical, they fill up the police departments, they have nearly killing impets, but these "neurotic" characters offered a fresh perspective to movie goers in those days. And even in our times. When Morrissey once said the family/society battlefield really haven't changed much since the 50s [in terms of homophobia, family values, police authoritarianism], then is where you see what James Dean's films, as well as many of those in the 50s and 60s, mean to him.

  • Was watching a James Dean documentary last night (rather eerie as I didn't remember it was the deathdate until it was mentioned in the documentary!), was quite surprised to discover a new Dean-based inspiration for one of Moz's lyrics!

The doc was titled "James Dean Remembered" (1974). I'd seen it on TV years ago, but it's included as a bonus feature on the recently released 'Rebel w/o a Cause" special edition DVD. It contains a clip from an early TV drama in which Dean plays a "psychotic convict" who at one point says, "My only weakness was... nevermind." Sound familiar? He then proceeds to rip open his shirt in a very Mozlike fashion!

It's well documented that some of Moz's lyrics are quotes or plays off of movie or book dialogue, but I'd never read about this one. It's doubtful that Moz would've had access to the entire 50s TV show at the time "Shoplifters" was written, but he'd certainly seen this documentary (which by the way, includes interviews with Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood before their untimely deaths and is quite good in general)!

  • There are so many lyrics that are taken from books, movies, quotes that it would be impossible to list them all! I enjoy the unexpected delight when I come across familiar lines in an old movie or book. Bravo Moz, you've piqued my interest in subjects I might otherwise have overlooked.
Concerning the late great James Dean, I can't imagine what he would look like at 74! It is just as well...

  • Just seen a documentary that mentioned that James Dean found shooting rabbits terribly exciting. If Morrissey meets Dean in heaven in the future I wonder whether Morrissey will blank him. Also presumably Moz would be able to smell that he's a carnivore and would be unable to be near him anyway.

  • Not sure why this is particularly flamebait. It's well known now that Dean was certainly very actively bisexual. The sexual ambiguity of past "icons" who were unable or unwilling to have public queer identities has always interested Moz: Wilde, Cocteau, etc.
