Smiths hang in National Gallery - BBC News

Excerpt:

The photo, used for the inside gatefold of the 1986 album The Queen is Dead, shows the four members of the band outside the Salford Lads Club.

The club has since become a Mecca for fans of the band, who split in 1987.

"I never anticipated that one of my photographs would still be being talked about after 20 years," said Wright.

Sonny Jim also writes:
Stephen Wright's Salford Lads Club picture is to be added to the collection in the National Potrait Gallery in Trafalgar Square.

The Gallery was "founded in 1856 to collect the likenesses of famous British men and women." It contains pictures of all the great and the good. So The Smiths really have, finally, been officially recognised.

I have always disliked the picture for that very reason! I hate it! Rourke and his stupid big packet following you around the room like creepy eyes in an old painting.

There are tons of better pictures taken of the Smiths. I think this one gets plaudits simply because it was for The Queen Is Dead.

Oh dash it all! I'm not going to be able to get the image of Rourke's Meat And Two Veg out of my head now and it's nearly bedtime.

Happy thoughts, happy thoughts, happy thoughts....

I've honestly never noticed it before, but thank you for spoiling the picture for me though!
Although i must admit, i think Andy's quite fit.
I wish you hadn't pointed that out though!!
Morrissey looks everso handsome in it though, so i'll get over the shock & tack eventually.

That's an interesting argument and it's probably fair to say that Andy's trouser display is there for artistic purposes.

But the way that the photograph is composed suggests that Andy's knob is more iconic and important that Moririssey's hair, which we know not to be the case.

In the detailed history of The Smiths, many mentions have been made to Morrissey's quiff. Far fewer have been made about Andy's lunchbox.

Look at fans arriving for gigs and conventions. Many style their hair like Morrissey as a symbol of fandom and respect, very few try and grow enourmous balls.

If anything the photo should have been designed thus; Hair - Salford Lads Club sign - genitals.
