Hilary Duff mentions Morrissey on MTV Music Awards, Smiths in Jane
posted by davidt on Monday August 29 2005, @09:00AM

An anonymous person writes:
Unfortunately, I'm watching the MTV Music Awards hosted by Diddy as he now wants to be called. The Duff and her boyfriend Joel Madden walked out hand and hand to introduce the next band to perform. She said that he has introduced her to many bands that she now loves: (in this order) Morrissey, AFI and the Murderers. He then whispered in her ear, and she said, I always get that wrong, here are the Killers. On a sidenote, she really looks awful lately, has succumbed to being Hollywood-skinny. The show is completely awful too, as most music on MTV is nowadays.

Peter also writes:
So I received the September issue of Jane magazine today in the mail. (Hillary Duff is on the cover) As I thumbed past the Skethcher ad, the piece on how to have a great crepe party and the Midol ad I was smacked in the face with this:

Of Course She Loves The Smiths (Hillary Duff gets all Goth....)

I'll let you guys take it from here.

And her Matrix-drone teen pop shows so much of a Smiths influence. What a trendy, stupid troll.

The Smiths is fashionable at the moment it seems. I spoke to a boy at Reading because he was wearing a Smiths t-shirt, & he didn't even know who Morrissey is. Did make me chuckle though.

As soon as she gets a new boyfriend she'll be name-dropping another band. Hopefully one of her younger fans will have a listen to The Smiths off the back of this & there'll be one less person buying crap records out there though.

I just had to google her as I've heard the name bandied about, but I haven't a clue who she is or what she sings. Judging by the picture on her fan site, she's pretty stunning, kind of a cross between Hairy Kate and Ghastly and J-Lo. But then you always get that airbrushed, wind tunnel look applied to tween idols, so you can never quite tell if they've been hit with the ugly stick.
Bless her tiny warped brain for calling The Killers 'The Murderers'. I suppose from that, we can guess at the level of her interest in Morrissey; her boyfriend didn't have his hand hovering anywhere near a remote control did he?
You can just imagine what he was really whispering to the guy backstage. 'Bill! Bill! We got a problem with the Duff mark one ... I think she's malfunctioned ... god damn!, I told you not to use that Thesaurus when you programed her ...'
Mind you, I suppose the more Moz is mentioned by the illiterati, the more hope there is for a generation to be converted.

Lately (as in the past year or so) I've seen so many people whom I'd never ever pick as a Morrissey fan fall for him since he made his comeback, and they really do like him.

Morrissey is, and has never been "in" so I really doubt this is what Hilary Duff is doing, if she wanted to be in with the goth crowd she'd definetly be pushing herself as a big fan of The Cure.
You can't say it's "fashionable" to like Moz these days, everyone can discover him at any time ... just because you don't like her music doesn't make her like for another band less real.
