Easily the best band of the last 20 years.... (Score:1)
It's so nice to see American publications recognize the brilliance of The Smiths. It seems like any other credible countdown, which ranks The Smiths amid Radiohead, Nirvana, The Beatles, Led Zep are more than likely British. Finally, mainstream American rock critics are pointing out that which has already been a reality; The Smiths have released some of the best albums of all time.

Except for I prefer TQID to 'OK Computer' (which i do also think is excellent!)

'Nation Of Millions' is great - Public Enemy's best album, and worth getting for the magnificent 'Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos' alone, which is spinetingling.

'Nevermind' - not as good as 'In Utero' IMO, but then it perhaps suffers slightly from being the most overexposed Nirvana album.

'Surfer Rosa'? Yeah, it's a toss up between that and 'Doolittle', though 'Surfer' has a more raw quality to it.

Never heard '3 Feet High And Rising', but I don't object to it being in the list.

REM, 'Automatic For The People', is phenomenal - wonder why that never made the list? I like 'Slanted And Enchanted' but would say 'Automatic' is better!

    i was devotee of early 90s indie rock, but "TQID" deserves more credit than "Slanted and Enchanted" for sure.

    Apparently 25 out 100 of the albums on the full list are by rap artists.

    Although I am not an ardent fan of this genre it is not without merit, However I do not feel this can be mainted over a whole album. The idea of listening to the ghastly 50 Cent for nearly an hour makes my feel quite ill.

    Are Morrissey fans supposed to like rap? Morrissey refers to it as dirge.

          I kept having to pinch myself to make sure it wasn't some terrible nightmare.

        Well I don't think Morrissey would rate any of these albums apart from his own one would he? If all we were allowed to listen to was Morrissey-approved artists our record collections would pretty much be Morrissey/Smiths back catalogues (with strategic scratches over certain tracks), Under The Influence and The best of Jobriath.

        I agree with you about rap to a certain extent. I am a fan but rap albums can get a bit 'samey'. Its not that weird to think of Moz fans liking rap. Rap is all about the lyrics, also the main attraction to Morrissey's music for most people. In this sense they are not poles apart.

                I can't understand why 9 & 10 are on the list at all. Maybe NWA because it was kind of a new musical idea but if it's innovation alone you're after then surely more artists that predate the 80's should be in the top ten. Other gripes I have are that I prefer Doolittle to Surfa Rosa and I think ok Computer has a couple of weak tracks on which means it isn't the greatest ever album - cos TQID is.

                Also, where are Automatic for the people and Ziggy Stardust?

                  Just think, it only took Spin '19 years' to give The Smiths some 'well deserved' credit. But I would have put Meat Is Murder at #1, The Smiths #2, Strangeways, Here We Come at #3 and Morrissey 'Viva Hate' in the #4 spot! After that, does it really matter?

                              Well technically, Pornography was over twenty years ago. But yeah... no Cure? How strange!
                              And what about Manic Street Preacher's "Holy Bible"? My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless"? Boards of Canada's "Music Has the Right to Bear Children"?
                              I guess part of the problem is that none of these records garnered even TQID's sales stateside.
                              I get the feeling, though, that Spin was trying to list alternative music's most influential records, rather than its best. Quality being so subjective with these things, I hope so. From that perspective, they did quite a good job. I'd put "Nevermind" #1 (grunge/modern rock), "Nation of Millions" #2 (rap), "TQID" #3 (emo), Pavement's "Crooked Rain" #4 (indie), New Order's "Substance" #5 (electronic) and call it a day, but basically I agree.

                                  It's not a carbon copy of the "Best Of" lists that come out of the UK every 10 days or so. For countless fans in the US, a band like Public Enemy is held in the same regard as The Smiths, and they too can't stand the shit littering the charts these days.

                                  Of course lists are the easiest target there is, so why not look at the bright side? It's an obvious point, but we're only seeing the lists that do feature Morrissey/The Smiths -- if every Best Of list that didn't was posted here, well, a nation of Moz fans would turn its back and gag...

                                    Not that I'm complaining, but not only do they put it at number five instead of number one, they put the most obvious album there...the most obviously commerically appealing album. Everyone likes the Queen Is Dead the best, and I agree, it is a thing of excessive beauty, but what about 'meat is Murder'? What about 'strangeways'?

I consider myself graced by God to see them play at Umass of all places on their recent tour. Any so-called music fan who dislikes them really should consider not listening to music at all.
