Ernie H. writes:

An amazing show with Alain Whyte (Apr. 30). Red Lightning has many good songs. "Record to be released later this year", said bass guitar player Johnny Anger. Morrissey walked by the floor to the back stage after the show was over. Be on the look out for more RED LIGHTNING. Coming your way soon...
---
In the set was one Morrissey song, "The Edges Are No Longer Parallel".

Alain and the Red Lightning took the stage about 10 PM and played until about 11:15 PM - a FANTASTIC show- the highlight for me was when he played "The Edges Are No Longer Parallel"

Yes Morrissey did walk through the club about 20 minutes after Alain left the stage... I was told that Alain had already left the building by the time Moz arrived @ 11:45 PM and that Moz said "I'm very sorry, I thought he was going on at Midnight!"

I did not have my camera ready when Moz walked right by us... he looked great!

    Cheers,

Okay, here's the deal. Morrissey showed up, went straight for backstage, and (I'm told) only to see that Alain had already left, & also left directly. All night, I kept waiting to see or hear some sort of a hint as to whether or not Alain was out or still in the Morrissey band. Jose Maldonaldo of SATH fame, kept yelling things out and seemed to have the best running conversation with Alain, but the question, "Alain, are you still in the Morrissey band?" was never yelled out. As I figured that I would have to be the one to yell it out, a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn't ask. I started thinking about it and I thought to myself, it might be inappropriate to ask him the question during his 'Red Lightning' show. I don't want to haunt the man with questions he may not give a rat's ass about! I just figured I'd leave the task to someone else, as I didn't want to offend him or anything. Also, I started to notice Alain became irritated by one overzealous fan holding up a picture for Alain to sign. Alain said over and over and over and over again that he would sign the Damn picture! But the guy kept holding it up for Alain to sign the picture right then and there, during the damn song, in a pushy, idiotic way. It's at this point, I realized Alain doesn't owe us anything, and I was right. This was his new band's show, and he IS the nicest guy in the world, but he's not gonna be pushed around either. Anyway, let me get to the good stuff, as I see it, that I noticed. Before the song "The Final Curtain" Alain introduced the song cryptically by saying "This song is called 'The Final Curtain' which of course, has fallen on me..." Then, in Morrissey-esk fashion, tore into the song. I found this statement to be interesting and wondered if it had some significance to his status in the Morrissey band. Also, another strange twist that I observed was when another fan, one much more considerate than the one I described prior, gave what looked like a Morrissey 'Kill Uncle' picture book or tour book to the bassist[John DiMambro], who in turn gave to Alain, who looked at the Morrissey 'Kill Uncle' book on the front and on the back a bit intently before he decided NOT to sign the book. Keep in mind, this happened fast and in sort of a passive way, as to not to offend, but significantly so as to get the message across. Anyway, Alain gave the book back to the John DiMambro, and the bassist gave the book back to the fan and said, "I'm sorry, he won't sign it..." I find this significant, not proof or anything that Alain was out of the band, but significant. Overall, the bands music was really good and amazing. If you heard it on the radio, you'd definitely think it is influenced by Morrissey, U2 and bands of the like. The band are really good, no doubt. So, I'll let you be the judge. Why wasn't Alain signed to Sanctuary as was Boz? Alain wrote all the hits to You Are The Quarry!? Why did Morrissey show up, only to find Alain gone!? What the hell is going on, and why won't anyone say anything, damnit? This is sooooo suspicious....(or not?) Has Alain left the band to start his own friendly venture, to leave the Morrissey saga behind? And is Morrissey trying to save his marriage by rushing in, last minute, to get 'his' boy back from the depths of the cruel world? You...Tell...Me.

(Don't hate me for the sensationalism, I'd desperately, secretly love to be a gossip journalist...)

As for me, You're damn right, Morrissey, you better do all you can to GET ALAIN BACK! Even if it means chasing him around L.A.!

Alain looked pretty good. He seems to have lost some weight. His mood was good, and he seemed happy to be playing. There were some sound issues, but nothing major. He stopped in the middle of one song and had to restart.

His opening song was really good. It was fast and catchy. I can't make out the title from the picture taken of the setlist by Jay, but the lyrics seemed to be about the war in Iraq. Namely, stuff about soldiers and innocent people dying for "a lie."

While Alain was playing all these up-tempo songs, I couldn't help but think, "Why is it that Morrissey seems to SLOW his songs down at live shows now?" It really seems to be a choice by Morrissey and not his band. And it's boring! But that's off topic, I guess.

There was some yelling from the crowd—mostly from Jose from Sweet and Tender Hooligans—stuff like, "We've missed you!" and "Will we see you at [inaudible]?" which I thought was a reference to the upcoming festival Moz is scheduled for. Alain did not respond. He came back for two encores. Someone gave him flowers. He signed a couple of things. Yes, that guy holding up that picture for him to sign the whole show was very annoying, but I think Alain signed the pic at the very end.

I didn't see Morrissey do his "walk-through" as I left as soon as soon as the show was over. I actually can't believe Morrissey would even show up there with the intention of watching the show. The room Alain played was so small. I don't know where Morrissey could've watched the show without getting completely mobbed by fans the entire time. I guess he could've climbed up the ladder and sat on the platform with the sound guy or something. Hah. Actually, the idea of Morrissey trapped in that room with 100 or so Morrissey fans is quite funny. It would've been interesting to see.

When it was released, moz's promotion was so bad that i came across it (with its two new b-sides) by accident. I already had the a-side on the album, but to think that so many fans were missing out on new, and great b-sides, was infuriating. Indeed, when it comes to Alain Whyte, be under no illusion - all the great Moz solo stuff you hear - Music by Alain, he is the heart and soul of moz's solo stuff. Apparently Boz in Polish means 'I was thinking of being Gay but then I joined Moz's band'. Anyhoo, I know the guy who cleans Alan's towels (he likes them nicely soft and comfy) and he said that Moz is going to release a single next week called 'Who you callin' a poofter?' with Alain on lead vocals and Boz on backing (Fnarr Fnarr).
