Final Fantasy’s Pallett Says Morrissey Should Have Side Projects
Thursday April 21, 2005 @ 01:30 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

After working on records by The Hidden Cameras, Jim Guthrie, Picastro, The Arcade Fire and Les Mouches in the last two years, you’d think Owen Pallett would be ready to soak up some glory on his own. But the way he talks about Final Fantasy, it doesn’t sound like he’ll be in the spotlight for long.

“It's a side project,” the singer and violinist says of his one-man band. “But then again I've come to realize it's a good idea to treat everything like a side project. I was just reading about Morrissey and how after every Smiths single came out he'd be going on about how they would all be entered into the great pantheon of music.

“And the Smiths are one of my favourite bands, but they're so overrated. I mean, they have like, 10 or 12 great songs and hearing Morrissey natter on about how great a song ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’ is, I mean, if Morrissey had some side projects, he'd feel better about his work.”

  • The Smiths great songs- most bar Work Is A Four Letter Word, Unhappy Birthday and a few others...
    Total count: A LOT!

Final Fantasy's great songs...nope can't think of any.
    Total count: 0

Before having cheap digs, he should be aware of his own work...and his own solo work cause nobody else is that bothered so it can't be great.

Overrated, I think The Smiths are perhaps accussed as being overrated because those that don't get their work can't understand those that don't.

  • This is the "indie" mindframe par excellence. "Morrissey and The Smiths suck because they put out only 10-12 great songs-- but had the nerve to say they put out many more! Meanwhile, me and my projects have never had any great songs at all. As such, I am far more consistent and therefore superior." Unrated > overrated. Yep.

  • Sounds like Morrissey feels fine about his work. Although I do quite like the idea of him ditching th' Lads in favour of side projects. Meaning, at this point I'd rather hear Morrissey overtop of Eurotrance, Van Halen, or traditional Bavarian cheese whistle music than their rote dad-rock.

And if I counted a band who only had ten or twelve songs I liked among my all-time favourites, I'd feel like a pretty big dunce.

And the Smiths had way more than 10 great songs.

I'm sure he knows that. It's one of his favorite bands.

    ...and how?
  • well, has anybody commented yet on what morrissey said? "the great pantheon of music," who is he trying to kid? if i was in the band with him at that time, i would have just laughed at him.

i mean...the smiths are wonderful, one of my favorite bands, but that kind of behavior doesn't seem befitting of the morrissey i had envisioned. i am beginning to see that maybe i overrated him. maybe i'm just too into the "indie" mindset, and i like the arcade fire and jim guthrie, and i think that mr. final fantasy is very talented.

and maybe people are just ridiculous, sometimes.
