I was watching court tv and on forensic files episode #123 "Frozen in Time". The story was about a girl Denise Hubert from Newport Beach CA who went to go see Morrissey in concert (in 1991) but never returned and ended up dead. They showed a picture of Morrissey when they mentioned "she went to see the rock band Morrissey"

I remember when that happened. I believe there was something about it in one of the SYL issues. I'm not 100% sure about that, but I know I read about it somewhere. Wasn't her car found by the side of the road?

    Very sad story, indeed :(

I found this blurb courtesy of someones blog:

Denise Hubert's murder was featured on the New Detectives (Discovery Channel)... I remember seeing posters looking for information on her disappearance when I would drive to UC, Irvine. Three years, her situation was unknown. In this time, the Costa Mesa, CA police kept trying to solve the case and find the girl. There was a large poster along side the 73 which I remember was the subject of a controversy when the owner of the property sold the property or something and the bilboard came down. In Arizona, cops looking at what they thought was a drug lab stumbled upon a freezer containing a frozen human body. It worked out that the suspect killed more than her.

Actually, she was kidnapped after the 1991 Pacific Ampitheater show in Costa Mesa from the side of a nearby freeway after her car broke down. And as someone mentioned, her dismembered body was found in a meat freezer in a public storage lot somehere in Arizona. It was big news in southern Orange County for a while with the aforementioned billboard signs along the 73 and 55 freeways.

I found the missing persons poster. This is what it reads:

On Sunday, 6-2-01, Denise and a friend attended a concert at the Forum in Inglewood. After the concert, they went to the El Paso Cantina in Long Beach. Denise was last seen 6-3-91, at approximately 2:00am when she took her friend home to Huntington Beach. Denise's car was found abandoned on the Corona Del Mar freeway, south of Bear Street on Monday night 6-3-91.

That juxtaposition of grotesque evil with the regular musical bounties presented here is quite upsetting. It's hard to imagine it really happening, especially to someone coming away elated from a Moz gig. Poor girl. Leaves a lot to be said for 'the 10 ton truck' and 'the double-decker bus'!

The main news that year, according to the 25th anniversary edition of Viz published in October 2004, was as follows:

              - Robert Maxwell dies. This will be celebrated annually by a firework display and the pushing of another fat man into the sea, chosen by public vote.
              - Following the runaway success of The Silence of the Lambs work begins on the sequel. Provisionally titled The Cannibal Run, it will star Anthony Hopkins as Dom DeLuis.
              - Terry Waite is released. He gets home to find his RV still on, although he misses the first seven minutes of Lovejoy.
              - Boris Yeltsin wakes up with his head in a pink stripey plastic bag and a hammering headache, convinced he’s the President of the Russian Republic.
              - Bryan Adams releases a single which is so astonishingly popular that it enteres the charts at every position between 1 and 40.
              - John McCarthy is released. The longest held British captive in the Lebanon, he arrives home to find he had left the TV, the iron and the central heating on, and over 9,500 messages on his answer machine. And 5000 pints of rancid milk on his doorstep.
