"New York Doll" film premieres at Sundance - features Morrissey

Just got back to Los Angeles, from opening weekend of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. I was lucky enough to catch the premiere of "New York Doll." I don't know where to start except with the words BRILLIANT! The documentary follows the history of the Dolls from start to break up. The film then catches the viewer up to speed with the interesting and emotional life of Arthur "Killer" Kane, through his finding of the Mormon lifestyle to the reuniting of the New York Dolls at Morrissey's Meltdown, and beyond. The film is tragic, and joyful all at once. I never lost interest in any of the story, and left the theater feeling that the festival was a completely worth the trip, thanks to "NY Doll."

Morrissey plays a huge role in the documentary giving interviews, and clearance to use the footage of the Banquet before the Meltdown gig at the Prince Royal Albert Hall in London. Several appropriate musicians are featured in this documentary, and all share very interesting facts and stories about Arthur, Morrissey and the New York Dolls.

I don't want to give to many details about the documentary without the permission of the filmmaker, so I will leave it as is. When I first heard of this film, expectations where high. Believe me when I say that EVERY music fan, especially NY Dolls and MOZ fans should see this documentary. I asked the filmmaker (who happens to be a very nice individual out of Los Angeles) if we should expect to see a theatrical release, all is unsure. To judge by the audience response, we will see it in theaters or on DVD in the near future.

One last note, a very appropriate Smiths song appears on the soundtrack, along with other very good music. Please email your interest in seeing the documentary so I can forward the emails to the filmmaker directly. I want to let him know how much "Moz" fan support he has.         Is there any possibility that Morrissey might release it through Attack? It could well be classed as a music DVD, but as a documentary does it fall into a category a music label couldn't cover?

          The Live from the Royal Festival Hall is an awsome concert.Get that one It also has a tribute to Arthur "Killer" Kane.

            Or should I say, saw a news story on this. Living in Utah, I must say I was shocked to hear that he became a Mormon. Very fascinating. Would love to see it.

                  New York Doll relates the meteoric rise, resounding fall, and recent all-too-brief resurrection of the seminal New York glam-rock-punk band, the New York Dolls, but it is foremost a story about the band's amazing bassist and leader, Arthur "Killer" Kane. With empathy, respect, and humor, director and friend Greg Whiteley follows Kane and interviews key musicians, friends, and colleagues to uncover the legacy of the Dolls and their significant impact on the London music scene in the dizzying heyday of the early 1970s.

                  After Kane and his band bottom-out on drugs and alcohol, he disappears from music, embracing a surprisingly different path when he becomes a born-again Mormon. When rocker Morrissey organizes a London reunion of the New York Dolls, Kane buys his guitar back from a pawnshop, takes leave of his Family Center library job, and heads back to New York City to prepare for an unlikely comeback.

                  How will the reconstituted band pull off its first performance in 30 years? Can these musicians possibly recapture the energy and élan that made them legends in their own brief time? What awaits Kane after his short reprise in the spotlight?                     Looks bound to get some kind of cinema release as it has been one of the most well received films of the festival. In addition, the success documentaries have had on the big screen over the last couple of years should ensure it gets a distribution deal.

                      Clips of the New York Dolls in action in the early years are also shown on the new documentary about the Ramones, in cinemas now. Both bands played in the same clubs. The ‘hot fuss’ created by the ferocious rhythms, the basic sentiments of the lyrics, the street-rough image and Joey’s voice of boyish longing, make for an attention-grabbing mix. The effect is of course evident in some of Morrissey’s music. The documentary details their influence on English bands like the Clash, the Sex Pistols etc, their touring and their lives. It’s interesting and enjoyable. It’s lovely that Morrissey not alone credits pioneer bands like those, but with, for example, NYD and Jobriath, intentionally turns the spotlight on their achievements, publicly honouring their important contributions in a way not acknowledged in their heyday, often to their very personal expense. Incidentally I read somewhere else that a group of philosopher writers, including Guy Debord, who called themselves Situationists and were about dramatically shocking people into awareness, have been credited with providing inspiration for the original punk rockers. Everyday’s a schoolday!
