J.Marr is trying to prevent the M.E.N arena DVD from being released. Does anyone know if it is legally possible for him to do this? Why would he does this?

I work for a small publishing firm and went to a xmas bash recently where we met up with other publishers, there was much discussion about a proposed new Morrissey biography by Albert Goldman (whose previous defamatory biogs include John Lennon and Elvis Presley,he is apparently concentrating on Morrisseys solo career from 1988 to present and includes contributions from various lovers, friends and hangers on,most of which have never spoken before.Being a long time Morrissey fan i hope and pray that it doesn't see the light of day but in this twisted world this kind of rubbish is sure to be a bestseller.

Update: 01/01 09:41 GMT: As noted in the comments, Albert Goldman died in 1994.

  • If this book gets published and has many secrets about Morrissey in it I would be disappointed. If there was evidence of Morrissey's sexual past and present I would absolutely not want to know. I really don't care who Morrissey finds more attractive, men or women, or if he is bisexual. I just don't want to know. I think it's none of our business.

  • I can say the above story about Marr is true. He does not want live Smiths songs released on a Morrissey live DVD. If there is anything fans can do to stop this idiots madness, please do so.

I am sure he is just embarrassed that Morrissey and his band play Smiths songs a million times better than the Smiths ever did and doesn't want to be shown up. It's petty and childish.

  • Johnny Marr is passing up a chance to pad his wallet by blocking release of the DVD. Stupid to pass up the royalties, isn't it? Those songs half belong to Morrissey and he has a right to play them in concert or include them in a live DVD if he wants. Did Moz put up a fight when Marr joined Neil Finn onstage for "There Is A Light..." a while back? What about "Meat Is Murder" for the Linda McCartney tribute thingie? Lame.

C'mon, Johnny! PLEASE give us another "Boomslang!" My table is a bit wobbly and I need to put something under one of the feet to make it steady.

  • Why would Marr do this now, and not oppose previous videos where Morrissey sang Smiths songs? That objection wouldn't hold up in all fairness; it's too late and pettily jealous unless there's something we don't know. It's quite sad really when people cannot rejoice in their old buddies' accolades.

I doubt anyone will bother with another biography until Morrissey's own story hits the shelves but I got a Christmas present of Mark Simpson's "Saint Morrissey" which is genuinely worth checking out, written from an admiring and very literate witty fan's viewpoint. 'Trouble loves me' eh?! And by embracing it, to get over it, and inspire? Viva Morrissey!

  • Al Goldman's current ability to smear Morrissey seems about as likely as an impending broadside from Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain or Ezra Pound. And no, James Dean will not be playing Morrissey in an upcoming film biobic.

    ...and how?
  • Am I in cloud cuckoo land or has the MEN show not already been broadcast on VH2 under the title Who Put The M In Manchester? My understanding is that things do not appear on TV networks without licence from the owners of the publishing rights. I recently bought some documentary film footage from a major UK network and it cost a fortune and I had to sign 3 seperate sheets saying that I do not OWN the footage but that it is merely on licence to me. I once spoke to a guy in the BBC Transcription Service Dept (these are the people who recorded and shelved the "Rank" show from Kilburn 86)about buying a copy of the entire show and was told with authority and in no uncertain terms that it was not the BBC's right to sell or distribute because of stringent copyright law. The rights to broadcast MEN show would have been paid under licenced agreement by VH2, these things do not happen for free because of copyright laws. That rumour about Johnny was something that somebody posted on the general board about a week or so ago I remember and was not substantiated in any way, just a comment and it was pretty much word-for-word the way it appears on this main page item. Looks like now that the tour is over we're back to rumours, lies and conjecture again. Viva Solo:)

Put yourself in Morrissey's position. Everyone has a go at him on here for not giving David more credit, but would you want anything to do with a site that constantly writes lies about you?

You run disclaimers and state clearly that a lot of these postings are submitted by others. Some things are true, some not, some interesting, some not. Everything is as it should be.

My only suggestion would be to make registration compulsurary. These anonymous posters are usually just shit stirrers who enjoy taking the piss out of people for no other reason than themselves being born with extremely small genetalia.

  • If this rumour is true, then I can understand where J Marr is coming from. The MUSIC belongs to him. Perhaps if Moz sang a cappella Marr wouldn't mind, but Boz and Alain's diluted versions of Smiths songs must be galling for Johnny, an undermining of the quality of the original music. Perhaps to casual fans, i.e. very new ones who got into Moz through reading NME's Quarry review, it won't be apparent who's songs 'Headmaster' and 'Shoplifters' are - they may not even be aware that the music was written by Johnny.

Johnny can oppose this DVD if he wants to - so be it. I, for one, can understand - the music to these songs is, after all, his.

  • As i'm sure you have realised mr 'davidt' many people (including myself) have done a bit of research and found out that Albert Goldmnan died in 1994. so either a) you got your job in publishing by miracle, don't know your arse from your elbow, and are expecting the new George Orwell book anyday now, or b) have far too much time on your hands. Although in all honesty, i probably spenty as much of my time replying to this, as you did posting the story in the first place, and you probably get immense pleasure from how much discussion your false rumours generate. but still. grow up !

"Albert Goldman, who died in 1994, is notorious as the controversial biographer
of Elvis, who finally discredited himself with his much ridiculed attempt
to assassinate the character of the late John Lennon. Goldman may have been mean
spirited, but he did write a dope biog. of Lenny Bruce (which is out of print)
    and, in 1977, ..........& etc."

  • While I agree that Johnny Marr's attitude towards the MEN DVD (if these rumours are true) would seem rather uncharitable, one has to ask - why do so many people on this site take every opportunity they can to do him down?

Recall Morrissey's comments about "John Maher of Wythenshawe" "getting [him] where [he is] today". Those words contain much truth. The crux of the matter is this - you have to ask, why is Morrissey revered today? Answer - The Smiths. That's why people still take note of what he does. Who made the music of The Smiths so perfectly melancholic and angry, yet so brilliantly accessible? Johnny Marr. The acid test is this - if the Smiths had never existed, and Morrissey had been a solo artist from the start, what would his status be now? Nowehere near as high. Yes, we have two bloody brilliant albums (Arsenal, Vauxhall) and one very good one (Viva Hate), but there's also an average one (Quarry) and three poor ones (Kill Uncle, Southpaw, Maladjusted) as well as a few dodgy compilations. As a solo, the truth is the odds are actually against Morrissey in terms of catalogue to date - I'm still here because the highs of the solo catalogue are very high indeed. But without The Smiths, there's no way Moz would have the status he has today - Boz and Alain can't communicate Morrissey's words the way Johnny Marr could. We all have PLENTY to thank J Marr for, methinks!

  • What an odd thing to feel so strongly about. I dare say the Healers are crap, so are innumerable other bands, but I find I cope. As for the typical Healers fan - if you know how much they weigh, their age, and what their tastes are, you're either married to one or you're speaking from experience.

Really, you should worry about something else.
